Douglas Murray was born in Ireland.

Douglas Alexander Murray was born about 30 December 1823. He was the fifth son of James Murray and Elizabeth Rushworth.

His father died on 5 December 1834.

Douglas entered the Military on 26 February 1841, and was attached to the 81st Foot Soldiers[1].

He married, firstly, Mary Ann Murphy.

In 1844: Ensign Douglas Alexander Murray to Lieutenant, vice Farrant.

He married, secondly, Pennsylvania-born Mary Ann Beltzhoover on 8 March 1855.

They had the following children:

  1. James Patrick Murray (b. 18 May 1856)
  2. Catherine Beltzhoover Murray (b. abt. 1859)
  3. Elizabeth Rushworth Murray
  4. Susan Douglas Murray
Lt. Col. Douglas Murray served in the United States Civil War.

He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the 3rd Cavalry in the United States Army and served in the American Civil War with the 63rd New York Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant and was wounded in the arm at the battle of Spotsylvania (at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia) on 18 May 1864, the injury forcing amputation of his arm. He was hospitalized in Washington DC where he discharged the service by surgeon's certificate to date 30 November 1864.

He passed away on 19 July 1866 and was buried at Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States[2].

His Will was proved on 7 January 1873 at the Principal Registry to his widow Mary Ann Murray of Carlisle, Cumberland County, State of Pennsylvania, the Relict[4]. Effects under £200
