Biography

John was born in 1842 at Dandalup, Western Australia.

He was a farmer in the Murray district a bridge building contractor in 1869. John was a managing partner of Kimberley Pastoral Co. (Liveringa) from 1881-1890, an inspector with the Public Works Department from 1895-1902 and a JP in 1902. He employed sixteen Ticket of Leave men from 1866-1881.[1]

John was a Member of the Legislative Assembly for Murray from June 1904 to his death.[1]

Kalgoorlie Western Argus (WA : 1896 - 1916), Tuesday 12 January 1909, page 34
PARLIAMENTARIAN'S .DEATH, -Perth, Jan. 7. Mr. John Pollard McLarty, the representative of the Murray constituency in the Legislative Assembly died suddenly at Miss Moore's private hopital, and another name has been erased from the roll of old pioneers. For some months the deceased had been ailing, and such was his condition of health just before the last general elections, that he was resolved to retire from public life. However, he was induced to be a candidate for re-election, and the worry of a somewhat strenuous contest with Mr. W. J. George seemed to further enfeeble him. Though still weak, he took his seat at the opening of the new Parliament, and was frequently to be seen in his place during the succeeding sittings. About a month ago, however, he entered the Kareenya Private Hospital. Though his complete restoration of health was not expected, the late member's condition gave no cause for the apprehension of immediate danger. Last night, however, he took a serious turn for the worse, and expired suddenly this morning, the cause of death being heart disease.

The deceased was born at Dandalup, near Pinjarrah, in 1842. His years of early manhood were spent in farming and later he was for some time a contractor. Then he became the manager of the Kimberley Pastoral Comipany station. While there he acquired interests in pearling, with which industry he was for many years identified. On his returning southward again, he spent about seven years in doing inspectional work for the Public Works Department, but resigned his Government appointment in 1902, and took an extended tour through Great Britain, Europe, the United States and Canada. On his return he successfully sought election for Murray, which he had represented ever since.

Feeling references were made to the death of Mr. McLarty in the Legislative Assembly by the Premier and leader of the Opposition. On the Premier's motion the House decided to send a message of condolence to the late Mr. Mc Larty's relatives, and also, in order to allow members to pay their last respects to the deceased, that the House, at rising, should adjourn to Tuesday next.[2]
