OBITUARY NOTES FROM PINJARRAH. (From our own Correspondent.) I regret having to report the demise of Mr. John McLarty, sen., who had been gradually sinking for some time past. He expired at his residence, 'The Pinjarrah Arms' on Tuesday morning, the 6th inst., at the ripe age of 76 years. The funeral took place the next day. The mournful cortege proceeded at 2.30 p.m. and arrived at the Church at a little past four, followed by all the principal settlers. It was the largest funeral I have witnessed here, many friends having come a long distance to pay the last tribute of respect to the memory of one so widely esteemed. The burial service was performed by the Rev. R. Alderson, M.A., and some garlands of flowers, woven by the kindly hands of sympathising lady friends, crowned the grave and the melancholy proceedings. The deceased was one of the pioneers of this district, and arrived here in the ship Hindoo, in April 1839, having been engaged by Mr. Singleton, who was the Magistrate here in the early days, as manager for his estate. Mr. McLarty, It is well known, performed his duty in that capacity, with credit and ability. As an agriculturist, he was possessed with a thorough practical knowledge of the field, garden, and orchard, as also of cattle, horses, etc. After a time he farmed on the Singleton estate upon, his own account, and prospered. He then purchased an estate on the Murray River from Mr. Meares, now called 'Bythewood', where he has resided a quarter of a century, and carried on a successful business. Mr. McLarty leaves behind him a large family, all of whom have been excellently trained by the able experience of their deceased parent, thus qualifying them to become good and useful colonists. I may add also that they are all enterprising, and in a fair way of being successful. Two of Mr. McLarty's sons are pioneers in the Kimberley district, viz., Messrs. John and William McLarty. They have been there from the first and have experienced great hardships, and they are still battling on manfully at our far North settlement.
