Biography

Valentine Mayo, possible son of Valentine Mayo and Ann Patterson, was probably not born in Wilkes County, Georgia c.1767, as the data for this profile originally stated, though he may have ended up there. His (connected) parents were living in Buckingham County, Virginia when they had their first six children, then moved to the Carolinas and had three more.[1]

He married Winifred Wilder in Hancock, Georgia in 1813.[2] This implies that he could have been born as late as c.1793 (in which case probably from the next generation of Mayo parents) or this could have been a second marriage.

According to the census, in 1820 he was living in Hancock, Georgia with four males (three under age 10, one age 16-26) and two females (one 26-44, one 45 or older), and was 26-45 years old (so born between 1775 and 1794). Next door was Rachel Wilder, his widowed mother-in-law (age 45 or over).[3] The next older male and female living with them may have been children of a previous marriage.

He died at an unknown date and location after the 1820 census.

Research Notes

  • There were other Valentine Mayos. Two served in the War of 1812-- one in Virginia and one in Tennessee. Neither is likely to have been this one, both because of the locations and because he is estimated to have been born in 1767, making him around 45 years old at 1812. However, the DOB, unsourced, came with the orphaned profile. Family Search's version of this profile has him with unknown parents and born in 1785.

Mayo-3947 and Mayo-741 appear to represent the same person because: These 2 appear to be the same person. Fathers are the same.

Mayo-3947 and Mayo-741 do not represent the same person because: I don't believe that Mayo-741's parents are Valentine B. and Ann Patterson. Mayo-3947 has multiple records confirming his marriage to Martha Hughes and their children. There is also the record of his probate in 1859 and he appears on the Mortality Schedule for 1860.

Mayo-3947 and Mayo-741 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same birth and parents. Maybe 2 wives. Please review.

The merge you propose was just rejected six days ago, for good reason, all of which is described in this one's biography and in the comment posted just above yours. I'm in agreement with the other PM and will also reject.

Mayo-3947 and Mayo-741 do not represent the same person because: Mayo-741 was an orphan that had conflicting and apparently conflated information. The sources that were found to match some of the information, such as the wife and the Georgia location, strongly suggest that Mayo-741 has wrong DOB and is attached to the wrong parents. I agree with the other PM that they should not be merged.
