Biography

David Maple III was born in Pennsylvania between June 17 and September 13 of 1800, according to the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses.

David married Hannah Mahon on September 28, 1826 in Jefferson County, Ohio. [1] They were married by Jno. G. McCollough, Justice of the Peace. John G. McCollough was present in an 1826 Tax list for Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio. Also present in this Tax List were William B Maple (David's brother) and a Joseph Mayhorn.

David was probably enumerated in the 1830 US Census as "David Maplole" in Yellow Creek Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.[2] (Note that part of Yellow Creek Township [Township 9, Range 2] became part of Saline Township, Jefferson County in 1833.) David was enumerated next to Caleb Cope, who owned the SE quarter of Section 33 and NE quarter of Section 32 in Township 9, Range 2. Also nearby was James Marshall, who owned the north half of Section 33, Township 9, Range 2.

On November 5, 1830 David purchased 25 acres in Springfield Township, Jefferson County, Ohio (part of the W1/2 SE1/4 Section 9 Township 12 Range 4, this is on a branch of Yellow Creek, a short distance from where his grandfather David Maple Sr entered land in 1805) .[3] David and his wife Hannah sold this land on November 15, 1833[4], about 2 weeks after David's father applied for a patent of land in Coshocton County, Ohio.

In 1835 David's father, David Maple, also of Jefferson County, recieved a patent for land in Linton Township, Coshocton County, Ohio. The family of David III was enumerated in Linton Township in the 1840 US Census[5], living near his sister Hannah, who was the wife of Ezekiel Mahon. David Jr died in 1839[6], and David III (and wife Hannah) sold their interest in David Jr's land on October 13, 1840.[7] Soon afterward, David moved to Decatur County, Indiana, where his son Daniel B Maple was born in 1842, and his daughter Margaret Ellen Maple was born in 1844.[8]

In 1846 David III, with 5 children aged 5-16, appeared in a tax list for Boone County, Kentucky. In 1847 David appeared in the tax list again, this time along with Ezekiel Mahon. On November 1, 1847 David's daughter, Mary Ann Maple, married John P Utz in Boone County, Kentucky.[9] In the 1850 US Census, David's family was enumerated in Boone County, Kentucky, and he was also present there for an 1851 tax list.

In the 1850 US Census Thomas was enumerated in Tuscarawas Township, Coshocton County, Ohio on July 20. (He may have been working on the farm where David's sister Elizabeth lived.) On September 13, he was enumerated again living with his father in Boone County, Kentucky.

On November 25, 1850 David Maple of Boone County, Kentucky purchased 40 acres in Salt Creek Township, Decatur County, Indiana (SE1/4 SE1/4 of Section 24 Township 10N Range 10E).[11] David and wife Hannah sold this land in 1855.[12]

DNA Confirmation
Y-DNA
The Maple/Mapley Surname Y-DNA Project at Family Tree DNA is conducting advanced Y-DNA testing of patrilineal descendants of Benjamin Maple Jr. (See https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/maple-surname-dna-project/about).
So far, the project has tested 3 descendants of David R. Maple's son David Maple III and 1 descendant of David R. Maple's son William B. Maple.
All patrilineal decendants of David Maple III's father have the R-BY135865 Y-DNA haplogroup block, which is shared by all patrilineal descendants of David Maple III's great grandfather, Benjamin Maple Jr. (See https://www.familytreedna.com/public/MapleSurnameDNAProject?iframe=yresults)
Based on calculations involving Big Y-700 SNPs and STR variants, Family Tree DNA currently estimates that the BY135865 haplogroup was formed about 1734 CE (with a 95% confidence interval of 1587-1840 CE) (See https://discover.familytreedna.com/groups/maple-surname-dna-project/tree?subgroups=184710,204290,215004,245269,275270,297485)
In fact, we know that the BY135865 haplogroup block was formed no later than the birth of David's great grandfather (c. 1696).
Descendants of David's son Jasper Newton Maple also have the downstream Y-DNA SNP R-FT94958, which Family Tree DNA estimates originated about 1835 CE (with a 95% confidence interval of 1693-1928 CE). We have not yet tested descendants of any of Jasper's brothers, so we not know whether David belonged to the FT94958 haplogroup, but we do know that the FT94958 haplogroup was formed either with Jasper's birth (1832 CE) or David's birth (1800 CE).
Like all of David Maple Sr's patrilineal descendants, David Maple III's patrilineal descendants have a repeat value of 15 at STR region DYS497.
