In the 1850 US Census, "Jasper Maple" (age 18, born in Ohio) was enumerated with his parents, David and Hannah Maple, on September 13 in District 1, Boone County, Kentucky.[1]
On November 25, 1850, Jasper's father (David Maple of Boone County Kentucky) purchased 40 acres in Salt Creek Township, Decatur County, Indiana: the SE 1/4 SE 1/4 Section 24, Township 10N, Range 10E.
On June 23, 1853 Jasper married Lydia Warren in Decatur County, Indiana.
On June 20, 1856, Jasper purchased Lot #3 in the town of Smith's Crossing, Decatur County, Indiana. Jasper and wife Lydia sold this lot on May 22, 1857.
In the 1860 US Census, the family of "Jasper Maple" (age 26, born in Ohio) was enumerated on June 17th in Salt Creek Township, Decatur County, Indiana, living near his father, David Maple.[2] Listed in his family are wife Lydia (age 30, born in Ohio), and sons David F. (age 5), John J. (age 3), and George W. (age 1), all born in Indiana.
On August 6, 1862, Jasper Newton Maple enlisted as a private in Company A of the 68th Regiment of Indiana Infantry at Greensburg, Indiana. He was captured at the battle of Munsfordsville, Kentucky on September 17, 1862, and paroled the same day. On June 24, 1863 he was injured at the Battle of Hoover's Gap, Tennessee, when a cannon ball struck the ground near him, throwing him into the air. He was honorably discharged from service on June 20,1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.[3]
In the 1870 US Census, Jasper was enumerated "Joseph Maple" (age 40) on June 17 in Salt Creek Township, Decatur County, Indiana.[4] This is not his brother Joseph (age 30) who lived nearby. Evidently, Jasper Newton Maple, like his grandson of the same name, sometimes went by the nickname of Joseph. Jasper was listed with sons David (age 16), Joseph (age 14), George (age 11), Edmund (age 4), and Harvey (2), all born in Indiana. The family was apparently fond of middle names, as "Joseph" was John Joseph, "Edmund" was Lewis Edward, and "Harvey" was James Harvey.
Jasper's wife, Lydia, died on August 2, 1875 in Salt Creek Township, Decatur County, Indiana, and was buried there in Ross Cemetery.[5]
Jasper married Rebecca Fletcher on December 5, 1875.
On December 15, 1875, Jasper purchased 46.84 acres in Salt Creek Township: the NW fractional 1/4 of Section 30, Township 10N, Range 11.
In the 1880 US Census, Jasper's family was enumerated on June 15, again in Salt Creek Township, this time with his second wife Rebecca.[6] The family is listed as:
Jax .............(age 44) - born in OH; father born in PA, mother born in PA
Rebecky ... (age 44) - born in OH; father born in CT
George ..... (age 21) - born in OH; father born in OH, mother born in OH;
Eddie ........ (age 14) - born in IN; father born in OH, mother born in OH;
James ....... (age 11) - born in IN; father born in OH, mother born in OH;
Emmert .... (age 6) - born in IN; father born in OH, mother born in OH.
Also listed in the family was Jasper's stepson, jonas Fletcher, age 10, born in Ohio.
Jasper died on September 17, 1899 in Salt Creek Township, Decatur County, Indiana, and he was buried there in Ross Cemetery.[7] A deed for the sale of Jasper's land, dated September 28, 1899, named all of Jasper's heirs.
DNA Connections
Figure 2 illustrates some chromosome 14 DNA matches for Bruce Maple within the Family Tree DNA database. The segments marked in red represent DNA (46 cM on 2 segments) shared with a 3rd cousin (once removed) whose nearest common ancestors with Bruce are Jasper Maple and Lydia (Chambers) Maple. A 9.6 cM section of this DNA (cyan) is also shared by a descendant of Mary (Maple) Roseberry, a daughter of Jasper's great-great grandfather Benjamin Maple Jr. Adjacent to the largest segment shared with Bruce's 3rd cousin is a 13 cM segment (black) shared with a 5th cousin who is a descendant of William B. Maple, a son of Jasper's grandfather David R Maple.
A 24 cM segment (orange) is shared with a descendant of Francis Chumard, who appears to have been an uncle of Lydia (Chambers) Maple's grandfather John Chumard.
A 9.1 cM segment (blue) partially overlapping the large segment Bruce shares with his 3rd cousin is shared with a descendant of Dorcas Mayhorn (1794-1860), who lived in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Bruce also matches another of Dorcas' descendants (on a different chromosome) through a different son. It appears that Jasper's mother, Hannah (Mahon) Maple, and his uncle, Ezekiel Mahorn may have been part of a related family.
In fact, we know that the BY135865 haplogroup block was formed no later than the birth of Jasper's great-great grandfather, Benjamin Maple Jr (c. 1696).
Jasper's descendants also have the downstream Y-DNA SNP R-FT94958, which Family Tree DNA estimates originated about 1835 CE (with a 95% confidence interval of 1693-1928 CE). In fact, we know that the FT94958 haplogroup was formed either with Jasper's birth (1832 CE) or the birth of his father (1800 CE).
Jasper's patrilineal descendants have a repeat value of 15 at STR region DYS497. as do all patrilineal descendants of his great grandfather, David Maple Sr.
Autosomal DNA
See DNA Connections above.
A Maple 3rd cousin, once removed, (belonging to Y-DNA haplogroup R-FT94958) shares 106 cM across 15 segments with Bruce Maple, for whom Jasper Newton Maple and his wife Lydia are the nearest common ancestors. The largest segment (37 cM) contains a 9 cM segment Bruce shares with a descendant of Mary (Maple) Roseberry, daughter of Jasper's Great-Great Grandfather, Benjamin Maple Jr.
Additional findings from Ancestry DNA matches with nearest common ancestors David Maple III and his wife Hannah (Mahon) Maple:
24 cM across 2 segments (3rd cousin, once removed descended from
Jasper's son James Harvey Maple)
