Biography

In 1791, David Maple served in the Fayette County, Pennsylvania Militia from September 4 - 11.[1]

David Mapel appeared in 1795 tax records for Franklin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, along with his father, David, and brothers Ezeakel and Jacob.[2]
David Maple appeared in 1796 tax records for Franklin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, along with his father, David, and brothers Ezekiel, Jacob and John.[3]
David Maple appeared in 1798 tax records for Franklin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, along with his father, David, and brothers Jacob and John.[4]
David Maple is not present in the 1799 tax records for Dunbar Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where his father, David, and brothers Jacob and John are seen.[5]
David was listed as a single free man in the 1796 records and (unlike his brothers Ezekiel, David, and John) he did not own any horses or cattle. In 1798, David was no longer listed as single, and he owned one cow. The 1796 records explicitly state that David was living on David Maple Sr's land.

David moved to the Northwest Territory around 1799:
David does not appear in the 1799 tax list for Dunbar Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
David's son, William B Maple was born 1798-1799 in Ohio (according to the 1850-1870 US Censuses).
Note that Ohio was not yet a state at that time. David's Uncles William and Thomas were said to have moved to the Northwest Territory around 1797.
David Maypole and his brothers Jacob and John were inhabitants of Jefferson County, Northwest Territory in 1799. [6]

David's son, David Maple III, was born in 1800 in Pennsylvania (according to the 1850 and 1860 US Censuses).
In 1801, David Maple Jr was again taxed on property in Dunbar Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.[7]
Over the period 1801-1807, David Maple Jr appeared each year along with David Maple Sr, John Maple, and William Maple in tax lists for Dunbar Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. In 1807 the tax assessment reads:[8]
Maple, David - gone - 100 acres - land transferred to john McClelland
Maple, William - gone
Maple, John - gone
Maple, David - gone

In the 1820 US Census, David was enumerated in Knox Township, Jefferson County, Ohio (likely near New Somerset), living next to his widowed sister Mary Johnston, and his son William:
"David Maple" - Males: 1 (>44), 1 (26<45), 2 (10<16), 2 (<10); Females: 1 (26<45), 1 (16<26), 1 (<10)
David's son David was not enumerated with him at this time. Note that on October 2, 1817 David's older son William B Maple married Sarah Johnson in Guernsey County, Ohio.[9] Wheeling Township, Guernsey County adjoins Linton Township, Coshocton County, where David later lived.

In the 1830 US Census, David was enumerated in Clinton Township, Jefferson County Ohio (possibly living near his sister, Mary (Maple) Johnston):
"David Maple" - Males: 1 (60<70), 2 (15<20); Females: 1 (50<60), 1 (5<10), 1 (10<15)
Clinton Township was dissolved in 1833, when Carroll County was formed. Part went to Carroll County and the remainder became part of Springfield Township, Jefferson County. Some families enumerated near David in the 1830 Census include:
Alexander Brown [husband of David's niece Sarah (Maple) Brown] - who patented the W 1/2 SE 1/4 Section 21, Township 12N, Range 4W in 1832.
Isaac Taylor - who patented the E 1/2 NW 1/4 of Section 32, Township 12N, Range 4W in 1827,
William Jackman - who patented the NE 1/4 of Section 21, Township 12N, Range 4W in 1824 and 1825.
The locations of these land patents suggest that David was living in what is now the southeast corner of Lee Township, Carroll County.

5 November 1833 - David's son David III purchased 25 acres in Springfield Township (Jefferson County) (part of the W1/2 SE1/4 Section 9 Township 12 Range 4, this is on a branch of Yellow Creek, a short distance from where his grandfather David Maple Sr entered land in 1805) .[10]
David and his wife Hannah sold this land on November 15, 1833[11], about 2 weeks after David's father, David Maple Sr, applied for a patent of land in Coshocton County on 28 October 1833.

1 April 1834 - David's son Joseph sold 50 acres (the west side of he SW 1/4 of Section 18, Township 13, Range 5) In Carroll County, Ohio.[12] This is in the northwest corner of Lee Township, the same township in which David probably lived in 1830.
September 20 September 1834 - Joseph purchased 40 acres from James Johnston (in the northeast quarter of Section 15, Township 4N, Range 4W; Linton Township, Coshocton County, Ohio). This is the same section in which Joseph's father, David Maple of Jefferson County, entered land in 1833.
1834 Tax Assessment for Linton Township, Coshocton County, Ohio:[13]
Maple, Joseph - 0 horses, 2 cattle
Maple, David - 1 horse, 1 cattle
30 Apr 1835 - "David Maple Sr of Jefferson County Ohio" patented the NE1/4 NE1/4 of Section 15 Twp 4N Range 4W (Linton Township, Coshocton County). This was the land he entered on 28 October 1833.[14]
28 Jan 1837 - "David Maple Sr" sold 10 acres (of the 40 acres he purchased in 1835) to Joseph Maple.[15]

14 Oct 1839 - William B Maple was appointed administrator of the estate of David Maple, deceased.[16] On 14 January 1840, William filed an appraisal for David's estate. An estate sale was held on 24 February 1840, when estate items were purchased by William B. Maple, David Maple, John Rider, Ezekiel Mayhorn, and James Johnston.[17]
1 Jun 1840 - "Ezekiel Mahon and wife Hannah Mahon. daughter of David Maple, deceased" sold their interest in the land David Maple purchased in 1835.[18]
13 Oct 1840 - "David Maple and wife Hannah" sold their interest in the land of David Maple, deceased, to Joseph Maple.[19]
17 April 1845 - William B Maple, administrator of the estate of David Maple, deceased, filed a petition to sell David's land, in order to pay debts of the estate. Named as defendants in this case were: Elizabeth Maple, Thomas Maple, John Maple, John M. Johnson, and unknown heirs of Harrison A. Butler. William B. Maple stated that Thomas Maple and John Maple were living out of state at that time.[20] (John M. Johnson was a son of Thomas Johnson, deceased, who had purchased interest in the land from Ezekiel and Hannah (Maple) Mahon in 1840.)
6 Jun 1848 - William B Maple, administrator of the estate of David Maple, sold the land David Maple purchased in 1835 to John Carr.[21]
An entry in the Coshocton County Court records for the June 1847 term refers to David's land as the estate of David R. Maple.[22]

Errors in T. Grant Maple's Genealogical History of the Maple/Mapel Family in America

T. Grant Maple wrote[23] that the David Maple who died in Coshocton County, Ohio in 1839 was a grandson of Jacob Maple Sr. This was based partly on his belief that all of the Coshocton County Maples were descendants of Jacob. It also resulted from a misinterpretation of the limited data available to him. There is now a large body of historical evidence and DNA evidence indicating that David R. Maple was a son of David Maple Sr. This evidence will be discussed in In Search of the Real David Maple Jr, Maple Migrations, Decatur County MAPLEs, Coshocton County MAPLEs, and Maple DNA.

the undivided eighth part of the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 15, Township 4, Range 5. It appears there was an error in this deed, as recorded. Linton Township is in ranges 4 and 5. The town of Linton (and David Maple's land) is in range 4, but close to range 5. Almost certainly, this deed is referring to land in range 4. The actual east half of the northeast quarter of Section 15, Township 4, Range 5 was patented by David Bordenkercher on 7 November 1837. The east half of this land was sold to Peter Croniser on 12 June 1839.

DNA Confirmation

Y-DNA
The Maple/Mapley Surname Y-DNA Project at Family Tree DNA is conducting advanced Y-DNA testing of patrilineal descendants of Benjamin Maple Jr. (See https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/maple-surname-dna-project/about).
So far, the project has tested 4 descendants of David Maple Sr's son David R. Maple and 1 descendant of David Maple Sr's son John Maple.
All patrilineal descendants of David R. Maple's father have the R-BY135865 Y-DNA haplogroup block, which is shared by all patrilineal descendants of David R. Maple's grandfather, Benjamin Maple Jr. (See https://www.familytreedna.com/public/MapleSurnameDNAProject?iframe=yresults)
Based on calculations involving Big Y-700 SNPs and STR variants, Family Tree DNA currently estimates that the BY135865 haplogroup was formed about 1734 CE (with a 95% confidence interval of 1587-1840 CE) (See https://discover.familytreedna.com/groups/maple-surname-dna-project/tree?subgroups=184710,204290,215004,245269,275270,297485)
In fact, we know that the BY135865 haplogroup block was formed no later than the birth of David's grandfather (c. 1696).
Like all of David Maple Sr's patrilineal descendants, David R Maple's patrilineal descendants have a repeat value of 15 at STR region DYS497.

Autosomal DNA
Descent from David Maple Sr and his wife Mary (Johnson) Maple
Figure A shows chromosome 9 matches within the Family Tree DNA database for a Maple who is a 3rd great grandson of David Maple Sr's son John Maple.
This tester shares a 21.36 cM DNA segment on chromosome 9 (base pairs 116724402 - 133054779) with a 4th great grandson of David's son Jacob Maple (D).
He also shares most of this segment with 3 descendants of David's son David R. Maple. [A 2nd great grandson of William B. Maple's daughter Ann (Maple) Fuller (B) matches on base pairs 115788707 - 127642231 (15.77 cM), and a MAPLE who is a 3rd great grandson of William's son James B. Maple (C) matches on base pairs 122547228 - 132048664 (9.64 cM). A third descendant of David R. Maple, a 3rd great grandson of both William B. Maple and Joseph Maple (A), matches on base pairs 119878770 - 139720795 (35.74 cM)].
It appears that all of these segments were passed down from David Maple Sr and/or his wife, Mary.
Additional findings from Ancestry DNA matches with nearest common ancestors David R. Maple and his unknown wife:
Bruce Maple (descendant of David's son David Maple III) shares:
11-14 cM on 1 segment with seven ~6th cousins descended from David's son William B. Maple.
10-13 cM on 1 segment with six ~6th cousins descended from David's son John Maple.
