Manoeuvre, défricheur, laboureur et scieur de long par métier, Aubin Lambert ne sait pas signer et s'identifie par trois différents noms patronymiques: Lambert, moins souvent, Lambert dit Champagne ou Champagne.[8][9]

L'étude publiée en 1965 par Madame Montagne comprend des renseignements intéressants concernant les liens du nom Lambert à Tourouvre et ses environs. En 1534, trois Lambert, Jean, prêtre, Léonard et Michel, portent les signatures dans une requête pour obtenir de l'évêque de Chartres l'érection d'une confrérie de Charité rénovée à Tourouvre.

A la fin du XVIe siècle, Magdelaine Lambert est mariée à Anthoine Lousche oncle et tuteur de Jeanne Mullard, épouse de Pierre Rivard, père et mère des pionniers percherons Nicolas et Robert Rivard qui ont migré vers le Canada en 1648,[10] Marie Lambert est la mère d'Henri Pinguet qui migra vers le Canada en 1634.[10] Me Jehan Lambert est curé de Feings en 1596.[10] Pierre Cochereau agira comme procureur pour Michel Chastel, le pionnier d'Autheuil qui migra au Canada en 1661 et qui épousera Françoise Lambert, fille ainée d'Aubin.[10]

Aubin Lambert est baptisé dans l'église Saint-Aubin de Tourouvre[12] située dans le diocèse de Chartres et l'ancienne province du Perche, le mercredi 30 juin 1632, jour anniversaire de la translation des reliques de Saint-Aubin d'Angers;[13][3][14][4][15] il est le filleul de François Le Tourneux[16] et Marguerite Lambert, sœur d'Odard et veuve de Jean Allard.[17][13]

Migration:
Aubin migra au Canada avant 1662, vraisemblablement en 1659 ou 1660, ce qui rendrait impossible qu'Aubin est débarqué à Québec comme soldat du régiment de Monsieur D’Avaugourt en 1662 ou de la compagnie Grandfontaine du régiment Carignan-Salières en 1665.

Réal Aubin estime l’arrivée en Nouvelle-France comme suit :[19]

  • Un engagé en Nouvelle-France n’obtient normalement pas une concession de terre qu’après un délai de 36 mois.
  • Selon l'acte notarié de Guillaume Audouart (29cn-MFaML), le 14 mai 1663 Aubin Lambert possède une terre à Château-Richer.
  • En 1657, le mouvement d’émigration à partir de Tourouvre atteint son sommet [sic] et Aubin Lambert atteint l’âge de sa majorité.
Ce qui permet d'estimer l’arrivée en Nouvelle-France d’Aubin Lambert à entre 1657 et 1660, 1657 étant la plus probable de ces deux dates.

Selon Fichier Origine et PREFEN (PREFEN: base de données inaccessible, copie de notice complémentaire conservée.):

  • 1662 est établi comme année estimée d’arrivée en Nouvelle-France pour Aubin Lambert.[3]
  • On fait mention en pp. 1 & 2 de PREFEN Notice "Aubin Lambert" de trois actes comme suit :[20]
    • Un accord en date du 6 décembre 1658 par devant le notaire Le Fort dans lequel Aubin Lambert figure comme fils et héritiers d’Odard Lambert;
    • Un acte de vente en date du 7 janvier 1659 dans lequel Aubin Lambert figure comme témoin; et,
    • Le baptême de Jacqueline More en date du 9 mars 1659 à Tourouvre dans lequel Aubin Lambert figure comme parrain.
On peut ainsi estimer que la plus plausible date estimée d’arrivée en Nouvelle-France soit 1659 ou 1660.
Emplacement de la Terre 49

Établissement sur la rive nord du fleuve Saint-Laurent::
Le 14 mai 1663, il vit sur et possède, la terre 49, à Château-Richer dans la seigneurie de Beaupré sur la rive nord du fleuve.[13][21]

À l'automne de 1667, Aubin quitte Château-Richer pour s'établir sur la terre de la Pointe-à-Goulet de la seigneurie de Maur / Saint-Augustin, aujourd'hui Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, qu'il avait acquise au printemps de son cousin germain Jacques Goulet en échange pour la terre 49.[22]

Mariage:
Ayant le jeudi 4 septembre 1670 passé un contrat de mariage à Québec par devant le notaire Romain Becquet, Aubin Lambert âgé de 38 ans épouse Élisabeth Aubert agée de 22 ans, fille de Michel Aubert et de Jeanne Audeau, le lundi 29 septembre 1670 dans l'église de Notre-Dame de Québec avec la bénédiction de l'abbé De Bernières.[23][24][25][26]

Les dix enfants issus de la lignée Lambert-Aubert sont nés dans la seigneurie de Maure et la seigneurie de Lauzon.

Les 8 premiers enfants d'Aubin Lambert et d'Elisabeth Aubert sont nés sur la terre du milieu des trois terres attenantes de la Pointe-de-Goulet d'Aubin Lambert.[27] Les deux derniers enfants d'Aubin et d'Élisabeth seraient donc nés probablement sur le territoire de la future paroisse de Saint-Nicolas de la seigneurie de Lauzon. [28][29]

Recensement 1681:
La famille d'Aubin figure ainsi dans la seigneurie de Maure au recensement de 1681: Aubin Lambert ; Elizabeth Aubert, sa femme; enfants : Françoise, Catherine, Aubin, François, Elizabeth [sic]; 2 bêtes à cornes ; 8 arpents en valeur.[14]

Établissement sur la rive sud du Fleuve Saint-Laurent:
L'acte notarié rédigé le 28 mars 1688 dans lequel le percheron (et neveu des frères Juchereau) Claude de Bermen de LaMartinière concède à Aubin la terre 73 sur la côte de Lauzon, sur la rive sud du fleuve Saint-Laurent, fait mention qu'Aubin avait occupé cette terre depuis le 2 avril 1686, la date de déménagement de la famille d'Aubin d'une rive du fleuve à l'autre étant donc probablement en 1686[28] ou 1687.[29] Selon p, 5 de DesRoches 2017: « Dans un article publié dans la revue l’Ancêtre, l’auteur Sabine Champagne émet l'hypothèse que les chicanes incessantes des voisins d’Aubin et d’Élisabeth seraient la raison de leur déménagement de l’autre bord du fleuve à Saint-Nicolas. »[30][31]

Du côté Est, cette terre est voisine de la terre 74 de Françoise, fille ainée d'Aubin, et de son époux Michel Chatel qui est aussi né au Perche.[32][33][34] Les deux derniers enfants d'Aubin et d'Élisabeth seraient ainsi probablement nés dans le territoire de la future paroisse de Saint-Nicolas de la seigneurie de Lauzon.[28]

Aubin devient veuf le mercredi 4 octobre 1690; décès de son épouse Élisabeth.[13]

Le mardi 7 mars 1713, le prêtre missionnaire Pierre LePicard de Saint-Nicolas, rédige un acte d'Abandon des biens de Aubin Lambert et de ses enfants, à son fils Aubin Lambert, cette acte contenant un engagement de prise en charge à s'occuper de son père et de sa soeur Catherine, sourde-muette, pour le reste de leurs jours.[35][36]

Décès:
Le mardi 4 avril 1713, moins d'un mois après le décès de son épouse, âgé de 80 ans, Aubin Lambert décède et est inhumé le jour même, dans le cimetière de la paroisse Saint-Nicolas.[13][37] L'acte indique: âgé d'environ 85 ans.

Descendance:
Aubin Lambert avait 99 descendants en 1729. Il est estimé qu'il y a eu 1093 mariages de descendants de l'union du couple Lambert-Aubert entre 1670 et 1999.[38] Des noms les plus portés, le nom Lambert occupe le rang 23 en France et le rang 94 au Québec.[39]

A la fin d'avril 2014, l'Association des Lambert d'Amérique (ALA) comptait plus de 16,000 descendants d'Aubin Lambert dit Champagne. Des sept pionniers nés en Europe, surtout en France, pour migrer vers le Canada au 17e et 18e siècles qui sont à l’origine des Lambert d'Amérique tel qu'identifiés dans le Dictionnaire généalogique de l'ALA publié en 2006, on constate que trois de ces pionniers ont contribué plus de 80% du total de tous les descendants:

- Aubin, 16,030 descendants ou 43% du total
- Eustache, 8,903 descendants or 24% du total
- Pierre, 6,152 descendants ou 17% du total
- Autres, 5,826 descendants ou 16% du total.

"This immigration from Perche, established in Beauport, on the coast of Beaupré, on Île d'Orléans, was without a doubt the most remarkable of the groups of settlers that came to New-France, from the homogeneity point of view of and because its fundamentally agricultural character and its vigorous expansion."[41]

Manual labourer, land clearer, plowman and pit-sawyer {or simply sawyer) by trade, Aubin Lambert does not know how to sign and identifies himself by three different surnames: Lambert, less often, Lambert dit Champagne or Champagne.[8][42]

The study published in 1965 by Madame Montagne includes interesting information concerning the links of the name Lambert to Tourouvre and its surroundings. In 1534, three Lamberts, Jean, priest, Léonard and Michel, carry the signatures in a request to obtain from the bishop of Chartres the erection of a brotherhood of Charity renovated in Tourouvre.

At the end of the 16th century, Magdelaine Lambert was married to Anthoine Lousche, uncle and guardian of Jeanne Mullard, wife of Pierre Rivard, father and mother of the Percheron pioneers Nicolas and Robert Rivard who migrated to Canada in 1648,[10] Marie Lambert is the mother of Henri Pinguet who migrated to Canada in 1634.[10] Me Jehan Lambert is parish priest of Feings in 1596.[10] Pierre Cochereau will act as attorney for Michel Chastel, the pioneer from Autheuil who migrated to Canada in 1661, who would marry Françoise Lambert, eldest daughter of Aubin.[10]

Aubin Lambert was baptized in the Saint-Aubin church of Tourouvre[43] located in the diocese of Chartres and the former province of Perche, Wednesday June 30, 1632, anniversary day of the translation of the relics of Saint-Aubin d'Angers;[13][3][44][4][15] he is the godson of François Le Tourneux[16] and Marguerite Lambert, sister of Odard and widow of Jean Allard.[17][13]

Migration:
Aubin migrated to Canada before 1662, probably in 1659 or 1660, which would make it impossible that Aubin landed in Quebec as a soldier in Monsieur D'Avaugourt's regiment in 1662 or in the Grandfontaine company of the Carignan-Salières regiment in 1665.

Réal Aubin estimates the arrival in New France as follows:[19]

  • A worker in New France does not normally obtain a land grant until after a period of 36 months.
  • According to the notarial deed of Guillaume Audouart (29cn-MFaML), on May 14, 1663 Aubin Lambert owned land in Château- Richer.
  • In 1657, the movement of emigration from Tourouvre reached its peak [sic] and Aubin Lambert reached the age of majority.
This allows us to fix the arrival in New France of Aubin Lambert at between 1657 and 1660, 1657 being the most probable of these two dates.

According to Fichier Origine and PREFEN (PREFEN: database inaccessible, copy of additional notice available):

  • 1662 is established as the estimated year of arrival in New France for Aubin Lambert.[3]
  • Mention is made in pp. 1 & 2 of PREFEN Notice, "Aubin Lambert" of three acts as follows: [20]

We can thus estimate that the most plausible date of arrival in New France is 1659 or 1660.

Establishment on the north shore of the St-Lawrence River:
On May 14, 1663, he lived on and owned land 49, in Château-Richer in the seigneury of Beaupré on the north bank of the river.[13][21]

In the fall of 1667, Aubin left Château-Richer to settle on the Pointe-à-Goulet land of the seigneury of Maur/Saint-Augustin, today Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, which he had acquired in the spring from his first cousin Jacques Goulet in exchange for land 49.[46]

Wedding:
Having signed a marriage contract in Quebec on Thursday, September 4, 1670 before the notary Romain Becquet, Aubin Lambert aged 38 married Élisabeth Aubert aged 22, daughter of Michel Aubert and Jeanne Audeau, on Monday September 29, 1670 in the church of Notre-Dame of Québec with the blessing of Abbé De Bernières.[23][24] [25][26]

The Lambert-Aubert line's ten children were born in the seignory de Maure and the seignory de Lauzon.

The first 8 children of Aubin Lambert and Elisabeth Aubert were born on middle land of the three adjoining lands of Pointe-de-Goulet d'Aubin Lambert.[27] The last two children of Aubin and Élisabeth would thus probably have been born in the territory of the future parish of Saint-Nicolas of the seigneury of Lauzon.[28]

1681 Census:
The Aubin family thus figures in the seigneury of Maure in the 1681 census: Aubin Lambert; Elizabeth Aubert, his wife; children: Françoise, Catherine, Aubin, François, Elizabeth [sic]; 2 horned beasts; 8 arpents in value.[14]

Establishment on the south coast:
The notarial deed drawn up on March 28, 1688 in which the Percheron (and nephew of the Juchereau brothers) Claude de Bermen de LaMartinière, grants land 73 to Aubin on the côte de Lauzon on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, mentions that Aubin had occupied this land since April 2, 1686, the probable date that the Aubin family moved from one bank of the river to the other, therefore being probably there in 1686 [47] or 1687.[29] According to p, 5 of DesRoches 2017: «In an article published in the magazine l'Ancêtre, the author Sabine Champagne hypothesizes that the incessant bickering of the neighbors of Aubin and Elisabeth would be the reason for their move to the other side of the river to Saint-Nicolas.»[30][31]

On the east side, this land neighbors land 74 belonging to Françoise, Aubin's eldest daughter and her husband Michel Chatel, who was also born in Perche.[48][49][50] The last two children of Aubin and Élisabeth would thus probably have been born in the territory of the future parish of Saint-Nicolas of the seigneury of Lauzon.[28][29]

Aubin becomes a widower on Wednesday October 4, 1690; death of his wife Elisabeth.[13]

On Tuesday, March 7, 1713, the missionary priest Pierre LePicard de Saint-Nicolas wrote an act of abandonment of the property of Aubin Lambert and his children to his son Aubin Lambert, this act containing a commitment to take charge of his father and his deaf-mute sister Catherine for the rest of their lives.[51][36]

Death:
Less than a month after the death of his wife, on Tuesday April 4, 1713, "80 years old, Aubin Lambert" died and was buried the same day, in the cemetery of the parish of Saint-Nicolas of the diocese of Quebec.[13][37] The act indicates: aged approximately 85 years.

Descent:
Aubin Lambert had 99 descendants in 1729. It is estimated that there were 1093 marriages of descendants of the union of the Lambert-Aubert couple between 1670 and 1999.[38] Of the most popular surnames, the name Lambert ranks 23 in France and rank 94 in Quebec.[39]

At the end of April 2014, the Association des Lambert d'Amérique (ALA) had more than 16,000 descendants of Aubin Lambert dit Champagne. Of the seven pioneers born in Europe, especially in France, to migrate to Canada in the 17th and 18th centuries who are at the origin of the Lamberts of America such as 'identified in the ALA Genealogical Dictionary published in 2006, three of these pioneers are found to have contributed more than 80% of the total of all descendants:

Selon la "Carte, côte de Maur - ~1700" seulement deux terres attenantes donnant sur le fleuve mesurent 4 arpents 8 perches de front chacune: celle la plus au sud-ouest d`Aubin Lambert et celle la plus au nord-est qui avait appartenue à François Fleury avant la vente à Antoine Gaboury en 1687 d'un morceau mesurant 1 arpent 8 perches de front. La carte "cote de Maur - 1735" nous confirme pourquoi la profondeur de la terre avec front sur le fleuve qu’Aubin Lambert avait possédée entre 1670 et 1708 était de seulement 20 arpents et nous situe cette terre immédiatement au sud-ouest des terres désignées 'Cot de Maure' qui sont toutes d'une profondeur de 30 arpents.
    ii. Le milieu de la terre, qu'Aubin Lambert possède entre le 2 mars 1670 et le 17 aoùt 1708, était donc situé entre au sud du lac du Moulin (auj. lac Saint-Augustin), 35 arpents 2 perches de front ou 1.28 milles au sud-ouest de la limite de la seigneurie de Maur, aligné sur le chemin Jean-Chauvine, à l'embouchure de la rivière du Cap-Rouge et 38 arpents 9 perches de front ou 1.41 milles au nord-est de la limite ouest de la terre du moulin.
    i. According to the "Map, coast of Maur - ~1700", only two adjoining lands overlooking the river measure 4 arpents 8 perches in frontage each - the most south-western one of Aubin Lambert and the most north-eastern one which had belonged to François Fleury before the sale to Antoine Gaboury in 1687 of a piece measuring 1 arpent 8 perches frontage. Aubin Lambert had owned between 1670 and 1708 was only 20 arpents and places this land immediately to the south-west of the lands designated 'Cot de Maure' which are all 30 arpents deep.

Réal Aubin presumes that he was hired on contract as an engagé. Since there does not appear to be a listing for such a contract being made, it is a presumption, nothing more, and his subsequent logic on the 3 years before getting a concession falls down with it.


There were a lot of migrants who came on their own, without being contracted to anyone. If you look at 1666 census, at the end of the section for Québec there is a list entitled noms des volontaires non habitants demeurant dans Québec. Volontaires, not engagés. Someone who came on his own did not have any time limitation as to when they might receive a concession.

ALA bio for Aubin says « s'il est cité dans un contrat du notaire Audouart, le 14 mai 1663, c'est parce qu'il était arrivé . . . soit en 1662 ou avant . . . »

En pas de page #27, citant Réal Aubin en paraphase: «  Un engagé en Nouvelle-France n’obtient normalement pas une concession de terre qu’après un délai de 36 mois. »

En la même pas de page #27, je conclu : « On peut ainsi déduire que la plus plausible date estimée d’arrivée en Nouvelle-France est soit 1659 ou 1660. » À mon avis, cette conclusion plausible tiens toujours.

the concession listed in 1660 for him from Marie Favery is based upon a map at a later date, and names Pierre Duquet as notary (lost act). Pierre Duquet only started his notarial activity in 1663, so that by itself puts a question on that date. 1663 concession to Michel L'homme beside him was before notary Guillaume Audouart. There is no mention of the enigmatic illegitimate Marie-Thérèse Brière Lambert Devincennes in the Association des Lambert d'Amérique's thorough genealogical dictionary.

The excellent treatment of this issue by Marcel Walter Landry concludes:

"En conclusion, avec l'information actuellement disponible, je suis incapable d'établir l'origine de Thérèse Lambert."
