Oyler Family

My Grandfathers side of my fathers family

The name Oyler is of German derivation. It is the Americanized version of the original Euler which denotes the family's occupation as pottery makers. Descending generations spelled it Eiler. By the time our direct ancestor, Conrad, shows up in records, his name is written Iller. Once in America, as the family branched out into different areas, it seems that each son spelled it according to his preference. Our family, who settled in Virginia, spelled it Oyler. Before coming to America, these people and their forbears, who lived in the Rhineland Palatinates of Germany, endured a century of war, ongoing conflict between church and state. They disavowed the Catholic Church after their farmland was laid waste, the peoples' crops and livestock were confiscated, and religious persecution ran rampant. In short, both church and state made life unbearable for the peasant farmers and their families in their homeland. Conrad Iller' s parents were Michael Euler (b. 1662) and Anna Helfenbein (b. 1666 ), both of whom were born in Maar, Hessen State, Germany. Conrad was born in 1690 and his wife Anna Margaretha Gemelick was born in 1694, to parents Johannes Gemelick and Anna Roden. Conrad and Margaretha joined a German religious group who called themselves The Brethren.

These God-fearing folks organized their own religion, a basic protestant faith that drew its beliefs from an understanding of the Bible. After experiencing so much war, violence, and suffering, they longed to practice the pure teachings of Jesus Christ and to live peacefully with freedom to choose. Thus they were attracted to the message of tranquility and harmony offered by a traveling missionary. Between the years 1672 -1678, William Penn, a peace-loving English Quaker, made a trip up the Rhine River Valley, preaching brotherly love and forbearance. The Iller family along with the membership of The Brethren, embraced his message and eventually followed Penn to America to settle in Pennsylvania where they could farm virgin soil and worship as they pleased.

Conrad Iller sailed with his family from Rotterdam, Holland, 7 July 1729 on the ship Allen. With them came members of The Brethren congregation, about 30 families, including Alexander Mack, one of the founders of The Brethren church. The ship docked at Philadelphia on 11 September 1729. Of this voyage, J.E. Miller, one of The Brethren, wrote the following: "Our departure today will chronicle the end of the organized church [The Brethren] in Europe. The day of sailing has arrived, the last farewells have been said, the last look at the homeland has been taken, and we are off on a voyage of seventy days between Rotterdam and Philadelphia." Upon arriving in America, he continued, "When Alexander Mack and members of the church landed, there was great rejoicing. He led us to a small community on the outskirts of Philadelphia called Germantown." Settling in Germantown with other like-minded countrymen were Conrad Iller, his wife Anna Margaretha, and their six children, Elizabeth, Maria Dorothea, Catarina, Jacob, Anna Barbara, and Valentine I (pronounced Veltin). Valentine I is our ancestor. As years passed, Conrad's sons and daughters married. Valentine I and his wife Appollenia Gelwicks (evolved to Gilbert), moved south and west of Philadelphia into Manheim, York County. Here Veltin was appointed constable. Later, his son Jacob served in the War of the Revolution, an Ensign, 2nd Company, 7'h Battalion of the York County Militia. Another son, Valentine II (nicknamed Felty), is our direct ancestor. He married Mary 'Molly' Arndt, and they are the parents of eleven children. Their 7'h child, Daniel, born about 1792, is our ancestor. This third generation of new Americans changed the spelling of their name to Oyler. The Oyler family moved into Franklin County, Virginia, just after it was created in 1786. Coming from Pennsylvania with an influx of German and Dutch emigrants, Valentine II acquired 50 acres of land on Gill's Creek, 2 March 1789. In that same vicinity, an Oyler's Creek is mentioned as early as 1786. Daniel Oyler was born in Rockymount, (spelled Rocky Mount on maps) Franklin County, Virginia, in 1792. On 1 February, 1819, he married Elizabeth Crook, daughter of Michael Crook who probably was residing in Rockymount with his family, including five other children, when the Oylers arrived. Daniel and Elizabeth are the parents of eleven children including our ancestors.

The Tussie Family

History of Huntingdon and Blair Counties, Pennsylvania by J. Simpson Africa Philadelphia, PA: Louis H. Everts, 1883, pp. 320-328. Contributed by Mike Gifford & Ken Boonie. Revised and proofread by Judy Banja.

CHAPTER XLVIII. Hugh Means, a native of Delaware, received a patent in 1769 for a tract on Shaver's Creek, located in 1763, called Aughendarraugh. After living there a few years he purchased a large tract of land in Morris, a part of which is now known as the Tussey farm, on which he died. He was married to a daughter of Matthew Dean, and reared three daughters, who married David Tussey, of Morris; Thomas M. Owens, of Warrior's Mark; and Evan Crane, of Franklin.

John Tussey came into Hart's Log Valley before the Revolution and settled near Alexandria, now in Huntingdon County. He married and led the life of a farmer. They had three children, viz.: David, John B., and Mary. David was born near Alexandria in 1783, and passed his boyhood days with his uncle, Hugh Bowers. When twenty-one years of age he migrated to Canoe Valley, where he worked at whatever he could get to do until his marriage to Miss Elizabeth Means, daughter of Hughey and Margaret (Dean) Means. The Deans were one of the oldest families in the county, and suffered loss of property and relatives by the Indians. After his marriage he worked rented farms for a few years, by which means he got his start in life, and finally got a farm of his own. It was a part of his father-in-law's farm, and on it he lived until his death, which occurred in 1866, his wife following him some six months later. They were both members of the Presbyterian Church for many years, and Mr. Tussey was most of the time one of the officers thereof. To them were born fifteen children, of whom ten grew to man's and woman's estate. Read more.

The Brideau Family

My Grandfathers side of my mothers family Early Origins of the Brideau family The surname Brideau was first found in Savoy (French: Savoie) in the Rhône-Alpes region of the French Alps.

Migration of the Brideau family Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: 18 recorded immigrants who settled in Canada between 1600 and 1900. Among earlier settlers were Jean Bridault, who was married in 1687 in Quebec; Marie-Anne Bridaut lived in Quebec in 1704.

Jean Brideau was born about 1625, in Montmorency, Montmorency, Seine-et-Oise, France as the son of Brideault and Bastrache. He married Marthe Duclos in 1650, in Montmorency, Montmorency, Seine-et-Oise, France. They were the parents of at least 1 son. He died on 1 January 1675, in his hometown, at the age of 51, and was buried in Montmorency, Montmorency, Seine-et-Oise, France. He was a carpenter.

When Jean Hilaire Brideau was born about 1659, in Montmorency, Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France, France, his father, Jean Brideau, was 36 and his mother, Marthe Duclos, was 25. He married Marie Creste on 21 April 1687, in Notre-Dame de Québec, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. She was baptized at Quebec City on October 10tb 1657, widow of Robert PEPIN, and daughter of Jean CRETE and Marguerite GOSSELIN. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 4 daughters. He died on 7 June 1699, in Quebec City, Canada East, British Colonial America, at the age of 41, and was buried in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. Jean Bridault like his father was a carpenter, per his marriage contract and record. He was living as a roofer in Quebec.

Louis BRIDEAU, son of Jean-Hilaire BRIDEAU and Marie Josephte PAQUET, married at Charlesbourg, Quebec, on July 5’ 1756, to Marie-Thérèse THOMAS called “Bigaouette”, baptized at Charlesbourg on August 1735, daughter of Jacques THOMAS and Thérèse PEPIN. Louis BRIDEAU was a carpenter and lived in Paspebiac, Quebec, before coming to Caraquet where he lived for 15 years. He finally settled at Tracadie, N.B., where he died on December 2’ 1801. He is the ancestor of all the BRIDEAU in the Maritimes.

The Olivier Blanchard family, together with the families of Alexis Landry, Olivier Léger, and Louis Brideau, were co-founders of the village of Caraquet, in the locality of Sainte-Anne-du-Bocage. The first Caraquet, Brideaus is Louis Brideau Born in 1728 (son of Jean-Hilaire Brideau and Marie-Joseph Paquet of Charlesbourg, Quebec and Marie-Therese Thomas (daughter of Jacques Thomas and Therese Pepin). They were married in 1756 in Charlesbourg.

The Micmacs colonized the region at least 2500 years ago. Caraquet was part of the district of Gespegeoag, grouping together the coast of Chaleur Bay. The main Micmac villages were located in Pokemouche , Tracadie and Tabusintac . Little is known about their presence in Caraquet and this is mainly apparent from oral tradition, which maintains that they camped at Pointe à Brideau, west of the port. In fact, Caraquet is the first natural port east of the Nepisiguit River , which was to make it a popular place in the event of a storm.

Placide Gaudet says that Louis Brideau has been living in Paspebiac for several years around 1765 before he settled in Caraquet where he lived from about 15 years. He then moved to Tracadie and that is where he die in 1784. In 1784 he had received a grant of 500 acres . It was located where the fishing school is now and the place was called “Pointe a Brideau. A river in Saint-Simon also bears his name. The Brideau River. Unfortunately his son Francois had to mortgage Point a Brideau to he Robin company and they then gained control of it. There was also a river at St. Simon called Riviere a Brideau. both Louis Brideau and his wife succumbed to survey in the winter of 1801-1802.

Hi, Leslie, I see you made many comments on Acadian profiles about relationships (i.e. XXX was a descendant of YYY). These types of comments aren't usually kept on profiles. The best option is too use a sticker if you want to acknowledge a relationship. Here's the page about how to make them.

You can also put a First Nations sticker on those whose native status is confirmed. Thank you, Cindy Bourque Cooper, co-leader, Acadians Project

Hello, I am a WT Ranger and we are here to keep an eye on our tree and provide help if possible. I noticed you created the following profile using Find-A-Grave as your source. While they can be a reliable source, pre-1700 profiles using Find-a-Grave must include a picture of the gravestone. The source you provided does not include a picture. Here is the HELP page from the German page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Germany_Project_Resources

Reliable Sources with Conditions Find A Grave, Billiongraves and other cemetery sites would be deemed reliable only when a picture of the headstone is provided. Remember that even grave markers can have errors in name spelling and dates.

with the information I posted. There are more records but as you mentioned when you go back to the 1600s it gets much harder due to wars, relocations, name spellings at this time. So please give me a chance as I continue to research the information. The Grave information does match Conrad Michael Euler Sr. and his wife Katharina Hermann, who was born March 1634, in Basel, Basel-Town, Switzerland.

If you have any questions or suggestions, post them to the team page or send me a private message. See the Membership page for info about a Member sticker (let me know if you have questions about stickers too).

Hi Leslie,

We're sad to inform you that the Black Sheep Project is being dissolved. All BSP's subprojects will be moved in pieces under the Notables Project as categories and perhaps as Teams, depending on interest. Witch Trials will become a subproject of Notables.

Your BSP project member badge will soon be removed. If you'd like to join the Notables project, please let one of us know and we'll get you a Notables badge.

Please email either of us if you have any questions and if you'd like to join the Notables project.

Thanks, Susan McNamee & Traci Thiessen ~Co-leaders, Black Sheep Project

Hi ,

On behalf of the Connectors Project Leaders, we are doing a six-month check-in with members. Please let us know if you are still active. If you are active, please let us know in which ways you are currently contributing to the project.

All of us at WikiTree would like to thank you for your contributions and hope that you are enjoying exploring your roots.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Leslie,

I haven’t heard back from you about the United Kingdom Project breaking up into the individual country-level projects of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. I hope all is well with you. I assume you don’t wish to join any of them at present, and will go ahead and remove the United Kingdom badge. If you wish to join England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland in the future, you would be most welcome to do so via the respective G2G sign-up post.

Many thanks for all your contributions,

Susie :-)

The registration for the brand new Connect-a-Thon is open now, so if you would like to join us, make sure you first add an answer at this Connect-a-Thon 2019 registration G2G saying you would like to participate and join the Flying Dutchmen - Vliegende Hollanders team and just add your WT ID to the team Flying Dutchmen - Vliegende Hollanders, at our Connect-a-Thon team page where you also can see how everything works. And here's our team chat .

Hi Leslie

It has been a couple of weeks since we contacted you about your participation in the Acadia Project and as we haven't heard from you, we are following up to make sure you wish to remain a member.

We understand that interests shift as we grow our shared tree and that some members may have moved on to projects more pertinent to the branches they are currently building. If this is the case for you, please let us know.

If we do not hear back from you within the week, we will assume you have moved on to other things for the moment and remove you from the project. Please know that you will always be welcome to rejoin should your interests shift back in this direction.

Thank you so much for your participation; we genuinely appreciate it.

Karen ~ Volunteer Coordinator

Hi Leslie!

Thank you so much for responding to our check-in. We are delighted that you wish to continue contributing to the Project Name. Below is a quick checklist for active members. The project leaders would like you to make sure you have done the following:

1) Checked the Project Page for ways to contribute.

2) Added Project BLACK_SHEEP to the tags you follow.

Thank you!

Hi Leslie,

We realise the time has come to dissolve the UK Project in favour of the individual country projects of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

We are checking in with all UK badge holders to find out which country project(s) you would like to be in so you can collaborate with other members, have the opportunity to select which team(s) you would like to join, and so we can ensure you have all the correct badges.

Please respond by PM to let us know which country project(s) you would like to be in. Please don’t assume we know. We are effectively starting from scratch to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

Once you have done this, the Coordinator for Membership in the relevant country project(s) will be in touch to help get you situated.

Many thanks,

Susie
