Biography

Mary was born 13 February 1889 in Pilton, Devon, England, daughter of George Kingdon and Mary A. (Routcliffe) Kingdon. ^{[1] [2] [3]}

In 1891, her family's address was Rock Hill in Pilton. Mary's father was a House Mason. ^[2]

At the age of 21, in about August 1910, Mary married Charles Nutt in the Barnstaple registration district. ^[4]

Mary and Charles were sharing accommodation at 22 Higher Maudlin Street, Barnstaple with Charles' parents and his sister Lottie at the time of the 1911 Census. Both Charles and his father John Edward Nutt worked at a lace factory, where Charles was a Lace Twister and his father a Machinist. ^[5]

By 1913, Mary and Charles had emigrated to Canada. First, Charles (whose name was recorded as "Chas") travelled without any family members on the Ultonia of the Cunard line, which departed from Southampton, England on 23 April 1912. Although the Outward Passenger List showed his destination port as Quebec, the Incoming Passenger List indicated that he arrived 6 May 1912 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, heading for Calgary, Alberta, intending to work as a Railroad Labourer. ^{[6] [7]} Mary followed in 1913, sailing aboard the Royal Edward of the Royal line, accompanied by her son George, Charles' parents John and Bess Nutt, their daughters Lottie Nutt and Caroline (Nutt) Popham, Caroline's husband James Popham, and their children Doris and Ivy Popham. They departed from Avonmouth, Bristol, Gloucestershire on 2 April 1913, and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 8 April 1913. ^{[8] [9]}

Mary and Charles had four children (George, Irene, Florence, and Lottie) when they were enumerated for the 1916 Census at 1229 - 21st Avenue NW, Calgary. Charles worked as a Foreman in the City Paving Department. Living nearby at 1210 - 21st Avenue NW were Charles' parents, his sister Lottie, and the family of James and Caroline Popham. ^[10]

About two years later, Charles died. ^[11]

In 1920, Mary married Alfred Martin in Calgary. ^[12]

Mary and Alfred were still in Calgary at the time of the 1921 Census, residing at 207 - 5th Avenue NE with Alfred's son Bertram Alfred (14), her daughter Irene (7), and their son Jack (7 months). Alfred was a Checker in the freight yards. ^[13]

In 1926, only their son Jack (5) was still at home with Mary and Alfred. Their address was 315 - 17th Avenue, N.W. Calgary. Mary's children George Edward Nutt (abt.1911-1932) and Irene Nutt (abt.1914-1930) resided at the Provincial Training School, Red Deer, Alberta. ^[14]

Five years later, Mary, Alfred, and Jack (10) lived in a 5-room house at 462 - 12th Street NW, Calgary. ^[15]

By about 1940, they had moved to the Vancouver, British Columbia area. ^[16]

In 1945, they resided at 1840 Cypress Street, Vancouver. ^[17]

Eight years later, they were living at 106 Hythe Avenue South, North Burnaby, British Columbia. ^[18]

After Alfred died in 1954, ^[16] Mary and Jack continued to live at 106 Hythe Avenue South. ^{[19] [20]}

Mary died on 8 May 1962 in Burnaby, British Columbia at the age of 73. ^[3]
