Biography

George was born about May 1911 in Barnstaple, Devon, England. [1]

By 1913, George's family had emigrated to Canada. First, his father Charles (whose name was recorded as "Chas") travelled without any family members on the Ultonia, arriving 6 May 1912 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, heading for Calgary, Alberta. [2] George and his mother Mary followed in 1913, sailing aboard the Royal Edward, accompanied by members of his father's family. They departed from Avonmouth, Bristol, Gloucestershire on 2 April 1913 and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 8 April 1913. [3]

In 1916, they lived at 1229 - 21st Avenue NW, Calgary, Alberta, not far from Charles' parents, their daughters Lottie Nutt and Caroline (Nutt) Popham, Caroline's husband James Popham, and their children Doris and Ivy Popham, whose address was 1210 - 21st Avenue NW. Charles worked as a Foreman in the City Paving Department. [4]

George's father died when he was about seven years of age. His mother remarried two years later. [5] [6]

By 1921, George had been placed in the South Edmonton Home for Mentally Defective Children at 10647 - 81st Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. The Census recorded his age and the birthplace of his parents incorrectly. [7] [8] [9]

In 1926, George resided at the Provincial Training School, Red Deer, Alberta, along with his sister Irene. [10] This institution opened in 1923 to care for children and adults with developmental disabilities. [11] [12]

He remained a patient at the Provincial Training School, Red Deer in 1931. [13]

George died 7 November 1932 in Red Deer at the age of about 21. [14]
