Biography

According to the Family Bible Birth Registry, Clara Haag was born June 2, 1861, according to her Death Certificate, she was born June 2, 1862. She was one of 13 children born to Jacob M. & Lydia (Myerly) Haag. Clara was born and raised in the city of Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [1]

Clara Haag married Benjamin Fletcher Weaver on December 19, 1878 [2] at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity, 31 South Duke Street, Lancaster City, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. [3] Between 1880 and 1887 they would have five children two girls and three boys. Their names were, Benjamin Weaver, George Weaver, Charles Weaver, Marie (Weaver) Titus and Melete Weaver, of which two, their first and last born, Benjamin and Melete, died in infancy. [4]

In the 1880 federal census, Benjamin & Clara are residing in New Holland with their 5-month-old son Benjamin F. Weaver. [5] Their first-born child Benjamin Franklin Weaver died at the age of 7 months and 7 days on August 15, 1880. Young Benjamin is listed in the New Holland Trinity Lutheran parish birth and death records, he may be buried in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery, although no church burial record has been found.

Their daughter Melete, born November 7, 1887 in Philadelphia and passed away at the of age 7 months & 10 days on June 17, 1888. In June, 1888 Benjamin and his family were residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 866 Bambrey Street, the address shown on their daughter's death certificate. [6] Her casket with remains were shipped to New Holland, Pennsylvania, buried June 19th. Burial may have been in the New Holland Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Melete is listed in the church death records although no church burial records were found. [7] [8]

In the 1889 Philadelphia City Directory, page 1856 lists Weaver, Benjamin F., (Clara's husband) carpenter, living at 866 Bambrey. In 1890 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, City Directory, page 1914, it lists Benjamin F Weaver, carpenter, living at 4519 Merion Street.

The 1900 United States Federal Census Benjamin and Clara are residing at South 1934 Hicks Street. in Philadelphia. [9] The census shows Clara to be the mother of five children, with three living at the time of the census: George Adam, age 19, Charles H, age 18, and Marie, age 15.

The 1907 obituary of Clara's brother Charles Haag notes that Clara was residing in West Collingswood, NJ.

The 1910 United States Federal Census, enumerates Benjamin, Clara his wife of thirty years and son George renting a house at 421 Slone Avenue, Collingswood, Camden County, New Jersey. [10] [11] Benjamin is 57 years old and working as a elevator erector in a elevator works. Clara is 49 and the mother of 5 children, 3 of which are living. Son George is 29, single and working as a machine hand for furniture factory. [12] Benjamin's occupation is listed as "elevator erector for elevator works". Son George, age 29 is still residing with them.

In 1919, Clara purchased graves 10, 11, & 12 in Lot P-19 in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Their residence at that time was 3014 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia. Son Charles purchased graves 4, 5 & 6 in Lot P-19.

In 1920 United States Census, shows Benjamin, head of household is living with his wife Clara renting a house at 1109 Columbia Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is listed as 60 (actually 67) years old, while Clara is listed at 50 (actually 59) years old. Benjamin is working as an erector in the elevator industry and Clara is keeping house at home. [13]

Benjamin died in 1928 in a tragic accident from a "punctured lung from electric drill accident". At a center city job site for Otis Elevator, Benjamin was pressing through a tight passage behind a steel beam when a drill bit broke through the beam puncturing his lung, resulting in a fatal wound. He was rushed to Hahneman Hospital in Philadelphia but he didn't survive. What a terrible shock that must have been for Clara and her family.

Clara died at home at 2832 Poplar Street, 15th Ward, in Philadelphia on March 1, 1930 of chronic myocarditis at the age of 67 years, 9 months, and 14 days. She was buried in Arlington Cemetery on March 20, 1930 alongside her husband Benjamin. There is no headstone. FAG Memorial 74670835. The gravesite of her son Charles Haag Weaver borders Clara's grave sites, with Charles's gravestone dividing the two plots.

Death Notice: Weaver – March 16, Clara H., wife of the late Benjamin F. Weaver. Relatives and friends, also all organizations of which she was a member, are invited to attend the funeral services, Thurs., 2 P.M. precisely, at the parlors of Geo. H. Chew, 2511 S. 15th st. Int. private. Friends may call Wednesday evening. (newspaper unknown)
