Ulysses Grant Jr. "Buck", born in 1852, was the second son of the 18th President of the United States Ulysses Grant and Julia (Dent) Grant. He attended Emerson Institute in Washington, Phillips Exeter Academy, Harvard University and Columbia Law School completing his education in 1876. After graduation he was admitted to the New York bar and joined the law firm of Elkins. Buck worked as private secretary to his father in the White House for a over a year before accepted the post of assistant United States attorney for the Southern district of New York.

Ulysses, Jr. married Fannie (Chaffee) Grant, the daughter of Senator Jerome Chaffee and Miriam Comstock, on 1 Nov. 1880 at New York City. Together they had five children:

  1. Miriam Grant
  2. Chaffee Grant
  3. Julia Grant
  4. Fannie Grant
  5. Ulysses Grant

In 1880 he helped found and was a partner of Grant and Ward, Bankers and Brokers. Unfortunately, In 1884, his partner absconded with all the funds leaving Grant broke. He and his family went to Southern California in 1892 for a visit and moved there in 1893 deciding it was a good place for his wife's health as well as for land investments. Although Grant established a law practice upon arriving in San Diego, he soon decided to invest in real estate. He bought property throughout San Diego, including an old hotel that would eventually become the U.S. Grant Hotel and helped build San Diego. Grant became a member of the first group organized to plan for furnishing water to San Diego and was soon involved in what was known as the “great railroad enterprise,”. He was involved in the development of the City Park, later to be known as Balboa Park. Grant, Jr. was elected director of the Merchants’ National Bank, served as chairman of the Board of Directors for the San Diego Panama Exposition of 1915, was a member of the Elks and belonged to the Cuyamaca Club. He was a delegate from California and appeared twice as an elector at large (1904 and 1908).

Grant married for the second time America (Workman) Grant on 12 July 1913, four years after Fannie died. According to sources, they traveled extensively through California. Grant died on 26 Sep 1929 and is buried at Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego, California.

The newly-elected officers of the Chamber of Commerce are: Philip Morse, president; R. V. Dodge, first vice-president; U. S. Grant, second vice-president; J. E. O'Brien, treasurer; V. E. McConoughey, secretary. <Note: Morse and McConoughey were brothers-in-law. Was the U. S. Grant listed in this article U. S. Grant, son of the American President and Civil War General?>

Too bad the paper has a fold in it, so it is hard to tell what city Chamber of Commerce they were officers for....I think it is San Diego, but cannot tell from the newspaper. I know that Grant never lived in Los Angeles....
