Ellen "Nellie", the only daughter of Ulysses S. Grant and Julia (Dent) Grant was born on 4 Jul 1855 in Missouri. She lived the first two years of her her life in a log cabin, called Hardscrabble, that was built by her father. She was thirteen when her father became the 18th President of the United States. Nellie was sent to Miss Porter's School but returned to the White House shortly, finding the private boarding school was not to her liking. She was sent on a trip abroad to England, along with many chaperons, to keep her out of the limelight that came with being the daughter of the President. It was on her way home from this trip that she met her future husband Algernon Charles Frederick Sartoris. At the age of 18, Nellie married Algernon Sartoris on 1 May 1874 in Washington at the White House.^[1]

Together Nellie and Algernon had four children: Grant Grenville Edward Sartoris (b. July 11, 1875 d. May 21, 1876); Algernon Edward Sartoris (b. March 17, 1877 d. January 17, 1928); Vivien May Sartoris (b. April 7, 1879 d. December 1933); Rosemary Alice Sartoris (b. November 30, 1880 d. August 28, 1914)

Nellie was granted a divorce after the marriage failed in 1889 and returned to the United States with her children. Sartoris died in 1893 and Nellie married for the second time Franklin Jones in 1912. Nellie Grant died on 30 August 1922, at the age of 67, and is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
