Jesse was the son of Ulysses S. Grant and Julia (Dent) Grant. He was born in 1858 at St. Louis, Missouri and was named after his paternal grandfather. Jesse was just six years old when he, along with his mother, joined General Grant at City Point, Virginia in 1864 where he was "practically a front-line witness to the Civil War."[1] Jesse had moved around all his short life, from Missouri to Ohio and Illinois, and through the Civil War campaigns. Even after the end of the war, the Grant family moved frequently living in Philadelphia for a time, then Georgetown, D.C., and then to a house on I Street in Washington. Jesse received his first formal schooling there in Washington, For Jesse the eight years in the White House were his longest time period living in the same home until his nine to ten years in Los Altos Hills, but even then he changed addresses. In 1873 Jessie made his first trip west to California and he made a second trip to California in 1874. Jesse studied engineering at Cornell University in 1874 when he was still under the age of 17. He attended Columbia Law School but dropped out after only a year. "He apparently never took a degree from any higher learning institution"[1].
Jesse married Elizabeth (Chapman) Grant in 1880 at San Francisco, California. He and Elizabeth had two children together: Nellie and Chapman. In October of 1893 Jesse moved his family to San Diego following his brother's move there. While in San Diego, Jesse found success in his real estate ventures. Never the less, Jesse appeared to be rootless, never staying in one place long, and ended up leaving his wife and children. He was involved in several mining ventures as an engineer, a stockholder, a board of directors member, a corporate officer and managed his brother's U.S. Grant Hotel in San Diego for several years. Jesse helped to develop Tia Juana, now Tijuana, Mexico, as a gambling resort in the 1890's. Jesse eventually ventured into politics. He ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1908 and indirectly in 1912 by endorsing Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson. Jesse finally received a divorce August 1918 In Nevada after pursuing it from July 1913 on. Shortly thereafter he married Lillian (Burns) Grant.[2] In 1925, he wrote a biography of his father, "In the Days of My Father, General Grant". Jesse died on June 8, 1934 and is buried at National Cemetery, Presidio, San Francisco.[3]
