John Grainger was born in Hutton Cranswick in Yorkshire East Riding in 1821, [1]
- John was the son of Joseph Grainger and his wife Mary Lamplugh.

John Grainger 49 is farming in Boynton with his wife Eliza 48 b Hildenby (sic) his son Fred 9 and mother Mary 83 b Kilham, annuitant, his brother William 47, plus (all unmarried) two female domestic servants and eight male farm workers living in. [5]
Second Marriage 1876 Bridlington Area
In 1876, after the death of his first wife, John Grainger 55 marries Marianne Hornby 36 in the Bridlington area and very likely in Boynton where he lived. [6] [7] [8]
A Prosperous Farmer 1881 Boynton
John Grainger seems to have broken away from his father earlier than his brothers did - he is not with the family in Auburn in 1851. In 1881 he is much the most prosperous member of the family with farm of over 300 acres in Boynton northwest of Bridlington, where he seems to have been settled for 20 years. He has a second wife Mary Ann, a son Fred age 19 and a visitor Annie Hornby age 70 who may be his wife's mother, and several servants in addition to the farm staff. He has lost one thing, the "i" from his surname. [9]
Death Burial 1900 Carnaby
On 1 Sep 1900 John Grainger died, probably on his farm in Carnaby, southwest of Bridlington. [10]
- Probate was given to his son Francis John Grainger and a relative of his second wife, Thomas Hornby. [11]
