Biography
Born 1829 Hutton Cranswick
Ann Grainger was born in 1829 in Hutton Cranswick, twin villages east of the main road from Driffield a little to the north, and Beverley and eventually Hull to the south. She is soon baptised at the church in Hutton. [1] Ann is the daughter of Joseph Grainger and hs wife Mary Lamplugh.
School 1841 Northsides, Kilham
Robert Lamplugh 25 + is the schoolmaster at what seems to be the remnant of Kilham Grammar School. There are 3 girls living in, ranging from Mary Grainger 18 to Margaret Danby 4. All are Lamolugh descendants. Mary & Ann GRAINGER are surely the daughters of Mary LAMPLUGH the elder Robert's sister and Joseph GRAINGER. Margaret DANBY is similarly the granddaughter of Richard DANBY and Jane LAMPLUGH another sister, whose son Francis DANBY is close by in Kilham. There may be more boys lodged elsewhere. [2]
Farming 1851 Auburn in Fraisthorpe
The coast of Yorkshire from Bridlington northwards is rocky, first chalk and then even harder rocks. From Bridlington southwards it is clay and silt, losing ten or more metres to the sea each year. Auburn and Fraisthorpe are at the start of these softer cliffs. By 1800 Auburn had lost the homes and farms of all but thirty inhabitants and by 1851 there was only one significant farmstead, which was where the Graingers lived, [3]
