Biography

Born & Baptised 1819 Hutton Cranswick

Robert Lamplough Grainger was born in 1819 in Hutton Cranswick, a thriving village south of Driffield in Yorkshire East Riding, where the chalk Wolds meet the fertile valley of the river Hull. ^[1]

Robert is the son of Joseph Grainger and his wife Mary Lamplugh.

A Farmer's Son 1851 Auburn

In 1851 when Robert is already 32 he and the other children seem to be helping their parents in a farmstead at Auburn, the last remnant of a village south of Bridlington and immediately north of Fraisthorpe, eaten away by the sea. ^[2]

Marriage 1856 Skirlaugh District

Robert's wife, Ann Byass, comes from Hornsea and after his marriage in 1856 he farms in that area, just north of Seaton village, so it is no surprise to find the marriage itself in that general area. ^[3]

A Farm and Family of his Own 1881 Seaton

In 1881 Robert is back close to where his father was born, with a farm of 87 acres at Bonfield, just north of Seaton and Wassand and so just west of Hornsea. His grown children are helping to work the farm as he did for his father, while one younger son is still a scholar. ^[4]

Death and Burial 1908 Seaton

Robert Lamplough Grainger lives on in the Skirlaugh, or mid Holderness Registration District until he passes away in early 1908. ^{[5] [6]}

Buried with his wife at St. Lawrence Churchyard Sigglesthorne.^[7] [1]

A farm labourer if lucky might earn one pound a week so Robert's savings and belongings equaled 25 year's wages, over half a million pounds today (2020).
