They served with the 332d Expeditionary Operations Group and the 477th Bombardment Group, both largely Black units of the United States Army Air Forces.

Maj. Purnell James Goodenough was born in the Pratt City area of Birmingham, Alabama, on 3 Nov 1920.[1][2][3] His parents were Purnell Goodenough, a factory worker, and Adele Strother, a teacher.[1][4]

He was a WWII veteran who registered for the draft on 14 Feb 1942, a student at Alabama's Miles College at the time.[2] Enlisting just short of a year later on 18 Jan1943, he served as part of the Tuskeegee Airmen, a group of African-American pilots in the American military.[5]

Purnell married Ethel Settles on 24 June 1951 in Alabama.[4] He passed away in Los Angeles County, California, on 12 January 1965.[3]
