Biography

William was born in 1786 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, United States.

His father, William Sr. died in 1803 when Willam Jr. was around 17. The will named his three sons William, Jacob, and John who were to have the land divided equally between them, while his three daughters Barbra, Anna Mary, and Susey were to each have eighty silver dollars when they came of age.[1]

In the estate settlement files, John Fulenwilder was named guardian of William, since William was under age as of 1803.[2] In 1810 the land was divided into 3 parts: William received lot 1 at 139 acres, John lot 2 at 178(?) acres, and Jacob lot 3 at 118 acres.[3] The same papers also include a final settlement dated 5 May 1810 stating the six children and the widow should each receive 59 dollars and 12 cents.[4]

He married Barbara Rhyne by marriage bond, dated 8 January 1812. Jacob Plonk was the bondsman.[5]

In 1850, he and Barbara were to be found in the Gaston County census. Daughter Mary who was in some way limited was living with them at age 27, along with a 78-year-old Elizabeth Froneberger and several teens and young adults.[6]

He died 20 October 1854 at age 68 years 7 months & 3 days according to his grave marker. This would put his date of birth at around 17 March 1786. He is buried at the Froneberger Cemetery off of Bess Road in Bessemer City, Gaston, NC.[7]

In a lawsuit stemming from the settlement of William Froneberger’s estate, Michael Kiser and Joseph Gamble depose that “ William Froneberger died in 1854.” [8]

These same estate papers list his surviving children as “Paul, Danl W., Ambrose, Philip, Lavinia wife of Jonas Deck, and Mary Froneberger a lunatic under the guardianship of Joseph Gamble.” According to the suit as of 1872; "Ambrose is dead and his heirs unknown to defendant reside in Gaston County; that Mrs. Lavinia Deck resides in Gaston County; and that as he is informed and believes, Philip Froneberger resides in the State of Arkansas;” also that “Paul Froneberger died in 186?”

Research Notes

Who was the Elizabeth Froneberger living with them in 1850? Could that have been a sister-in-law? His sisters were Barbara, Susey, and Anna Mary.(Green-20 16:02, 27 February 2016 (EST))
