Biography

Barbara was born about 1783.[1]

William Fronaberger executed a Lincoln County marriage bond on 8 January 1812, naming his intended bride as Barbara Rhyne. Jacob Plonk co-signed the bond as security.[2] Couples typically married the same day or within a few days after the groom's bond.

In a lawsuit stemming from the settlement of William Froneberger’s estate, Michael Kiser and Joseph Gamble depose that “ William Froneberger died in 1854.” Included in the papers of the lawsuit was a receipt dated July 23 1855 from Barbary E. Froneberger for $25 dollars, in part of her share in the estate. It was signed with her mark, indicating that she was unable to read.[3]

These same estate papers list his (and presumably her) surviving children as “Paul, Danl W., Ambrose, Philip, Lavinia wife of Jonas Deck, and Mary Froneberger a lunatic under the guardianship of Joseph Gamble.” According to the suit as of 1872; "Ambrose is dead and his heirs unknown to defendant reside in Gaston County; that Mrs. Lavinia Deck resides in Gaston County; and that as he is informed and believes, Philip Froneberger resides in the State of Arkansas;” also that “Paul Froneberger died in 186?”

In 1874 Jacob Froneberger, the executor of Barbara Rhyne Froneberger’s estate sued the executors of her husband William Froneberger’s estate for the sum of $800 they claim was due to her heirs - that amount was a part of her inheritance from her father Peter Rhyne’s estate. Additionally there was a lawsuit in 1873 from her executor against the estate of her son Paul stemming from his time as executor of her estate before his death. Both of these lawsuits give her year of death as 1861.[4]

Census Records

In the 1850 census Barbara and William are found in Gaston County with their daughter Mary.[5] Mary was referred to in later documents as a "lunatic." She apparently lived with her parents until their deaths, and then with her brother Paul until his death when she passed into the care of Joseph Gamble.

In the 1860 census Barbara age 77 and daughter Mary are living together. Next door is son Paul with his family and a few doors down is another son Philip with his family.[6]
