How should we spell the surname ?

A question on spelling the surname: Caudle or Cordle ? The internment register and individual interment cards at Maury Cemetery record his name as S. D. Caudle. Searching for a man named S. D. Cordle or Sterling D. Cordle is not productive as many of the major source documents spell his surname, 'Caudle".

Marriage to Mary Ann Roberson

On 18 Dec 1844 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, Sterling Daniel Cordle married Mary Ann Roberson. The wedding ceremony was officiated by Josiah Featherston. The surety on the marriage bond was paid for by John Cordle on 16 Dec 1844. (page 29 and WP 12/238).

Death & Burial

On Monday, 20 Oct 1892, at his home on 13th Street, Manchester City, Virginia, Sterling Daniel Cordle died. According to his obituary he suffered a paralytic stroke.

Maury Cemetery interment card records his name as S.D. Caudle and also states that he was paralyzed when he died. His remains were laid to rest in an unmarked grave of Maury Cemetery, Section 14, Division 8, Grave number- not sure yet,

Obituary / Funeral Notice

“Mr. S. D. Cordle died at his late residence, on Thirteenth Street between Decatur and Stockton, yesterday, in the 65th year of his age, from a paralytic stroke.
