Biography

Alonzo was born in 1850. He is the son of Alonzo Chubb and Elizabeth Sutherland.

The 1874 Kalamazoo census shows Alonzo working as a rail car repairer. His father repaired and made carriages and Alonzo, Jr. worked the next generation of that trade.

In 1895, Alonzo was awarded US Patent Number 543294 A for a Slack-Adjuster, a new and Improved Device for Taking Up Slack in a Rail Car Brake-Rigging. [1][2]

In 1905, Alonzo was awarded US Patent Number 790106 for a Hoisting Windlass, intended especially to be used for hoisting the heavy fittings of a rail car into position upon its framing. [3][4]

After his sister's death in 1895 and his brother-in-law's death in 1890, Alonzo Jr. and his wife Mary raised Charles R. Dobson, Jr. and, for some time, his sister Nellie. The boy was nicknamed "Roe". Both Roe and Nellie appear in the 1900 census and only Roe appears in the 1905 and 1910 censuses. Charles' granddaughter confirmed the nickname "Roe" for the young Charles and she shared that her grandfather used to receive letters from his sisters who described themselves as "the girls on the other side." The sisters lived on the "other side" of Lake Michigan with their grandparents in Copemish, Michigan.

His obituary reads:

He is survived by his widow and two brothers, H. D. Chubb of Michigan City, Ind., who arrived in the city today, and George Chubb of Copemish, Michigan.
