Biography

James is the child of Alonzo Chubb and Elizabeth Sutherland.

James married Elizabeth Hill. Their children are children: Mabel, Walter, Albert and Adelaide. In 1888, Elizabeth was hopelessly insane and was committed to Longcliffe Asylum.

After his wife's commitment, their children stayed with various family members and friends. I have found daughter Mabel with James' brother Henry and his daughter Adelaide with a family named Roe.

His daughter Mabel Chubb died of asphyxiation, overcome by illuminating gas in 1899.

At the time of his death in 1912, James lived at 81 Melbourne in the 1st ward of Detroit.

He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Detroit.

Working on the Railroad

James was appointed to Superintendent of the Air Brakes and General Inspector of the Michigan Central system in February 1887.[1]

James gave a "practical conversation" on air brakes at the Michigan Central depot to the railroad department of the YMCA.[2]

He was a master mechanic at the MCRR. He holds US patent number 702186 for a rail car coupling device and number 707048 for a rail car decoupling device. Both patents were issued in 1902. [3]

He is listed as Superintendent of Air Brakes in the Operations Department in Detroit for the Michigan Central Railroad, "The Niagra Falls Route" in 1903.[4]

D. C. Ross has been appointed Master Car Builder of the Michigan Central Railway with offices in Detroit, succeeding James A. Chubb who died recently.[5][6][7][8]

Record of Land Ownership in Detroit

Owned Lot 26 of Lognon Farm. [9]

Cottage in historic Corktown, Detroit, Michigan

A document of the City of Detroit City Council Historical Advisory Board entitled "Proposed Corktown Historical District, Final Report" recognizes James A. Chubb's home.[10] <Cathryn's note: I can find no date on this document. Can anyone date it?

"1662 Bagley, c. 1877

"James A. Chubb purchased lot 26 of Block 4 of the Lognon Farm from Luther Beecher, the landowner, in 1877 for $990. All of the lots on Baker Street in this block were sold between 1874 and 1878. James A. Chubb was a carpenter by trade, and it is possible that he build this house. He sold it to Agnes A. Ready, a knitter, in 1881; she, in turn, sold it to Ann M. Shanahan in 1887, and she, in turn transsfered it to Mary L. Hennessey in 1908, continuing the long line of Irish women owners in the community.

"The house at 1662 Bagley, whose old address number was 174 Baker, is a one story brick cottage with a transverse gable intersecting the main pitched roof to form the secondary entrance on the east side of the house. The overhanging eaves of the frontal gable created by the steeply pitched roof is supported by brackets. Centered in the gable is an arched opening with brick voussoirs and a carved keystone. The three-sided bay containing three elongated windows on the west side of the front facade has a molded cornice supported on paired brackets. Keystones project from the slightly arched window openings. To the east of this bay is the entrance with a transom above and large brackets supporting the porch roof. Brick one story workers' cottages are rare in the city, and 1662 Bagley is the only one left in Corktown. It is now painted red and white."
