I am trying to build more of my family tree. I have managed to find my 8th paternal great grandfather Benjamin Burch, who was born in Buckinghamshire. Also, I have found my grandmother's Pennsylvannia Dutch roots, with the Pannebecker family. I need to work on the Brenner, Randall and Parker families now.

My maternal great grandfather, William Coyne, his father, William, a tailor, and his wife Sabina Ralph, lived in London, but the Coyne family was of Irish decent as was his wife's family; Bridget Daly and her parents, Mary Carey and John Daly. Another great grandfather was Samuel Slater from Derbyshire, parents John Slater and Elizabeth Rushton while his wife, Honorah Brophy was Irish. Her parents were Patrick Brophy and Sarah Gleeson.

Hi Maxine!

Thank you for your contributions to WikiTree. I just received your message regarding the profile for Joan Grover WikiTree ID UNKNOWN-36091. I am not very familiar with working on English profiles and would appreciate your assistance and trust your expertise in this matter. I wish I had more time available for more genealogical activity.

Keep up your good work,

Hi Maxine,

I wrote to you recently as part of the England Project's annual check-in with our project members. I haven't heard back from you. I hope you are well.

If you could please drop me a quick note to confirm whether you are still interested in the project and wish to remain an active member, that would be very helpful.

If we don't hear from you within the next 2 weeks, we will assume you are no longer active in the England Project and remove you from our list of project members. You would be most welcome to re-apply to join the project at a later time by signing-up on the project’s G2G welcome post.

Many thanks!

Hello Ian

So sorry for not getting back to you. I did write a letter but to my great dismay, somehow it disappeared before I sent it.

Otherwise, one thing I thought needed some work were the Help pages being too difficult to use and locating the right one is nearly impossible. After I had explained my dislike and losing the letter, there was this great innovation of frequently used BUT EXTREMELY HARD TO LOCATE help pages. I haven't really sampled the new page but if it helps get to the right page it will be so important for all of us.

As to continuing on with projects that I like to help with, I enjoy sourcing and connecting when I can. I'm on a list for OT2 which may happen soon enough. Before that occurs, I'm working with Steve Whitfield on reducing Unknowns in Buckinghamshire. I'm contacting PMs with the information on their Unknown profile(s), asking them to take the time to change the Unknown or to allow me on the trusted list to do it for them. I've had some success and this week I have another 19 Unknowns removed, according to Steve. I haven't seen that yet. There will be more next week too. I'm working at clearing 150 Unknowns or close to it. This week will involve setting up requests for UPMs so I can clear more Unknowns eventually. So, I'm pre-occupied right now!

That's about it. I do wish that there were a person to consult with for Buckinghamshire. I've never been contacted by anyone other than Marion Pool when I graduated OT1.

Oh, is there anyway to perhaps guide new members to look at how the bios should be developed? I am so sick at seeing next to nothing on all these Unknown pages. By the time I've solved each Unknown, I've probably added all the basics.

With the new setup in creating profiles, I do wonder how citations are being judged as acceptable. It hopefully is more accurate than in the past. Setting up I'll post citations by 2013 etc between ref tags just doesn't cut it.

I can't think of much more to say, so hopefully that will help you to understand where I am at.

Being Canadian and not having any experience or background to understand English ways or issues in general, I can tell you that I do feel Alone in Buckinghamshire. Not nice.

Hi Maxine,

Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This is a courtesy email to share the After Adopting Orphans FAQ which explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Hello Maxine,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The England Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Thank you, Ginny. I am not sure what I want to do yet.

I have thought of checking out what is involved with the England Project. What does it involve?

I have a lot to clean up before I start learning about other projects but I thank you for the invitation.

Hi Maxine!

Did you know that we have a research tool that makes finding reliable sources easier? I use it all the time and it helps me remember different places to check. To give it a try, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research, scroll down near the bottom of that list, and select Research with RootsSearch (use your WikiTree email & password). There are over 20 websites to access from there. You can read more about the tool in the RootSearch FAQ. You can also find it on the profiles about halfway down on the right side.

Hi there, Maxine!

You are now a Family Member -- your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together! Start with the New Member How-To pages — they are really useful as you add profiles and learn your way around.

Thank you for adding your DNA to WikiTree. Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, use the reply link below this comment (on your profile) to let me know. I am happy to help! If I can't answer, I will help you find someone who can.

PS Click the green tags near the top of your profile and see others following the same surnames you are researching. The more of these clickable tags you add (20 max.) that include surnames, locations, periods of history or other genealogical interests, the more connections you will make and maybe find a few cousins! To edit or add more tags, click on the word “following” or use this link. This page will help you learn more about tags.

Hi Maxine!

Your DNA results can be found here:

https://www.wikitree.com/treewidget/Burch-4282/89

(You can also get to this DNA section by using the first two drop-down menus at the top of your profile, look for DNA).

Your 23 and me results have been added. It takes up to 24 hours for your results to appear on profiles. In the meantime, start adding profiles for you family starting with your parents. The more profiles you have, the more connections you can make. Soon you will connect to profiles already on WikiTree and that will help you find some new cousins.

Have a look at the DNA page in my comment above. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi again, Maxine!

I see you have started to add family members. Great, thanks for your contributions so far!

Before you get along too far, please review how to add sources. Sources are very important here on Wikitree. It is how we show where we got the info and help others find it too.

The easiest way to find sources is to use the handy RootsSearch link on the right side of any profile. You login with your WikiTree login. There are links to over 20 genealogy websites. I recommend starting with FamilySearch. Once you find a correct source, just copy and paste the citation provided into the profile. This can go at the end or use the inline citation tool to add it to the biography. Please copy and paste the entire citation when using FamilySearch or other online databases.

If you want to learn more about how to find info and sources for English profiles, consider joining the England project. You will learn a lot if you take their "Orphan Trail" self paced training.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, use the reply link below this comment (on your profile) to let me know. I am happy to help!

Thank you, Peggy!!

I needed to know how to add sources!! I now have to go back to do all of them properly. That should take a couple of days, I would think.

I have 3 families trees on Family Search, MyHeritage and Ancestry. I can't access very much easily but all the info is on these sites.

I did check that my Ancestry tree is public. "KESKE Family Tree" Keske is my married name. I am now a widow as my husband died almost two years ago. I just added him on my tree. I have his birth certificate and dead certificate. I wonder how to enter them on this site?

I will finish adding my second child too, in a few minutes. How do you deal with sources for them too?

As to our overall wishes, my sister, Elizabeth Wagner, who joined at the same time, wish to solve some mysteries. We have 3 three mysteries.

First: I have tried to find further ancestors for my paternal grandfather. It seems impossible, but it shouldn't be. From family stories, one ancestor, a Sir William Buckley Burch, apparently had accumulated a large swath of land in Hertfordshire. Rumour has it that he had a second bigamous marriage, from which we descend. When he died, a 100 year dispute took place over his lands and the division, thereof, amongst various family members. My grandfather received his share perhaps in the early 1900s, prior to 1914 anyway. He sold the land to his brother Jack, or John Burch, born 1882, in Tring, Hertfordshire. From family lore, he used the land to build a munitions plant for WWI. For his efforts, he received a "Sir", probably as part of the King's yearly tributes to citizens. Why can't we find this?? Talk about a brick wall! Searching brings up nothing.

Second: My maternal great grandparents are nearly impossible to trace - all four. Their parents are absolutely impossible to locate and validate. I swear, our family arrived as aliens from other space!!

Third: I am somewhat unbelieving as to what I read on the other sites, about our family history. We seem to be related to everyone important in history! I tell my sister some names and she goes ballistic. She's the historian. She starts telling me who they are and how our family is involved with every stage of history. I tend to downplay this, as I wonder how true it can be. So, we need some help, to unwind the past and to put it in place. I have made it back to Adam and Eve on Family Search twice. Is this normal?

Finally, having survived the wars on the other three aforementioned sites, we are happy to be in with people who are more trained in genealogy and we feel priviledged to be allowed to share our skills in any way we can. Self learning has been interesting, but we need some guidance now.

I would like to share my experiences with the programmers on the other sites. I could recommend improvements!!

Hi Maxine,

There is a lot to unpack here but I will try to address some of your questions.

Sourcing: On WikiTree, we encourage the use of sources from free websites like FamilySearch over paid sites like Ancestry. That way everyone can see the source. I can add sources to one of your grandparents so you can see how it should be formatted.

As for your husband, if his info is online, link to it. If you have paper certificates use a citation such as: Death certificate of --- Registration number: --- in the possession of --- Provide all the relevant info on the certificate.

For really recent people, you do not have to provide sources but you can if they exist (such as an obituary for those who have recently died and that's all that is available). Living people are automatically private and only a minimal amount of info is publicly displayed (unless they also become members then they can choose how much info to display).

To try to unravel your family mysteries, I would suggest contacting the folks at the England project for guidance. I am a member of that project but am still learning myself.

One thing that you learn through the WikiTree experience is we are ALL related and so we can usually connect our family to such notables as the Royal family. Find out more by going to "Connections" under the drop-down menu with your WikiTree ID at the top (or visit your profile page and scroll to the bottom). It is fun to see how your family is connected to historical figures and events but I try to not put too much stock in all that!

I hope that helps you get started.

Best wishes on your family history journey,

Peggy

I have added some sources to these profiles:
George William Burch (bef.1893-abt.1963)
Mary Florence Emeline (Parker) Burch (1903-1987)

A couple of formatting notes. The WikiTree links to a person's parents are on the right side when in edit mode; all other ID can be copied from the person's profile (next to their name). Just copy and paste these into the biography text box (though doing this is optional). You can cite Find A Grave from FamilySearch or directly from Find A Grave (scroll down to find the citation). The Find A grave template needs to be added manually: {FindAGrave|ID no.}}; (this step is also optional but easy enough to do). Find A Grave should go in the See also section because it is not a primary source.

I used the inline citation tool to add each source after the fact in the biography. To do this, type the fact (ie Jane was born in 1800.) then click the C in the tool bar above the biography text box and paste in your source. If you prefer, sources can go at the bottom of the biography text box after sources and references.

All of the above are little things you can learn as you go so do not let them stress you out! The main thing is to get your sources into your profiles.

Let me know if you have any questions along the way.

Peggy

PS For self directed learning, I highly recommend the England project's "Orphan Trail".
