Jean Baptiste Blanchard was born on 22 April 1714 and baptized the same day in Annapolis Royal. [1] He was the son of Antoine Blanchard and Elisabeth Terriot. His sponsors were Antoine Beliveau and Jeanne Gautrot, widow of Pierre La Noue.
He wed Marguerite Girouard on 22 July 1743 in Annapolis Royal. [2] The witnesses were Antoine Blanchard, Joseph Blanchard, Guillaume Girouard and Joseph Richard.
Children: [3]
In 1752, Jean-Baptiste and Marguerite were living in Memramcook with 4 boys and 3 girls. [4] His brother Paul Blanchard was living on the neighbouring lot. They were recorded again in Memramcook on the 1755 census with 3 boys and 3 girls. [5] [6]
In 1755 Jean-Baptiste was deported to Georgia without his family. [6] It is possible that Marguerite sought refuge on Isle Saint-Jean with her children, like many women whose husbands were deported alone, and then fled to Canada, Nouvelle-France. In October 1757 they were aboard one of two ships that left Isle Saint-Jean, either L'oyseau Royal owned by François Rullier, husband of Anne Forest, or a schooner belonging to Jean Maréchal, husband of Marguerite Doiron. Marguerite and the children disembarked at the port of Quebec in November 1757. Travelling with her were her sons Jean-Baptiste and Joseph, and her daughters Marie, Magdeleine, Marguerite and Anne-Gertrude. [7]
A smallpox epidemic was raging in Quebec in 1756-1757. Many of the 1144 [7] Acadians that reached Quebec City during that period were already exhausted by famine, other diseases and their many displacements trying to escape the roundups of the British soldiers. Approximately 300 Acadian exiles died in the city of Quebec alone. [8] Their daughter Anne-Gertrude age 4 died in December 1757 and their son Joseph age 11 in January 1758.
Jean-Baptiste was reunited with his family and they settled in Nouvelle-Acadie (St-Jacques-de-la-Nouvelle-Acadie that would later be called St-Jacques-de-l'Achigan).
Jean Blanchard, husband of Marguerite Giruard, passed away on 29 July 1779 and was buried the next day at St-Jacques-de-l'Achigan. He was given the age of about 65 years. [9] Were present his wife, his son Jean and many others.
