Biography

LUCY BALLARD, b. at Oxford, MA, 28 Aug 1758 daughter of Ephraim Ballard and Martha Moore;[1] Lucy d. at Winslow, ME, 8 Nov 1798; m. at Hallowell, 7 Feb 1778, her first cousin, EPHRAIM TOWNE,[2] b. at Oxford, MA, 23 Aug 1754 son of Thomas and Hannah (Ballard) Town; Ephraim d. at Winslow, ME, 20 May 1837. Ephraim married second at Winslow, 21 April 1800, EUNICE STACKPOLE, b. at Saco, ME, 7 May 1763 daughter of James and Abiah (Hill) Stackpole; Eunice d. at Winslow, 19 Nov 1851.

Lucy Ballard was the second eldest child and eldest daughter of Ephraim Ballard and Martha Moore. Lucy’s mother Martha Moore Ballard was a midwife who kept a detailed diary of life’s events. There are references to Lucy in her mother’s diary.

  • The birth of Lucy and Ephraim’s daughter Lucy is noted on 23 April 1785: Clear, hotte morn & very hott Day. Daugt Town unwell all Day. Calld her woming together about two O Clok aftern; was Safely Deliverd of a Dafter at 7 O Clok, but Somewhat weak. I Set up with her all night. mrs Straten Tarid, Slept with Betsy. (transcribed)[3]

Lucy married her first cousin Ephraim Towne. Ephraim Towne and his older brother Sherebiah were first in Hallowell, Maine, but after Sherebiah’s death, Ephraim and family moved to Winslow where they were living by 1790. Ephraim kept a farm at Winslow. He served as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Sheriff.[6]

The family of Ephraim Town was enumerated at Winslow in 1790 with seven persons: one male 16 and over, one male under 16, and five females.[7] In 1800, the household of Ephraim Town was ten persons at Winslow: one male 45 and over, one female 26 to 44, one male under 10, one male 10 to 15, two males 16 to 25, two females under ten, and two females 16 to 25.[8] Ephraim’s household was eight persons in 1810: one male 45 and over, one female 45 and over, one male under 10, one male 16 to 25, one female 10 to 15, one female 16 to 25, and two females 26 to 44.[9]

Lucy Ballard and Ephraim Towne were parents of ten children the eldest four perhaps born at Hallowell and others at Winslow, Maine.[10] Ephraim had three children with his second wife Eunice Stackpole.

iii MARY “POLLY” TOWN, b. 5 Nov 1781; d. at Winslow, 27 Nov 1871 at age 90 years, 22 days; m. at Winslow, 30 Dec 1811, as his second wife, Maj. ARTEMUS C. SMITH, b. 1782 son of Manuel and Sarah (Raymond) Smith; Manuel d. at Winslow, 12 Jan 1832. Artemus was first married to Remember Gibbs.

iv MARTHA “PATTY” TOWN, b. 13 Aug 1783; d. at Winslow, 29 Jun 1820.

v LUCY TOWN, b. 23 Jul 1785; d. 24 Apr 1802.

vi HANNAH TOWN, b. 14 Nov 1787; d. 8 Feb 1788.

vii HANNAH TOWN, b. 4 May 1789; d. 10 Jul 1793.

viii DOLLY TOWN, b. 24 Nov 1791; d. (burial at Augusta), 9 Aug 1858. Dolly did not marry. She is buried in the same plot as her sister-in-law Susannah Spring Town.[11]

ix JOHN TOWN, b. 3 Oct 1793; d. at Madison, ME, 29 Mar 1885; m. at Pittsfield, ME, 21 Feb 1822, ABIGAIL WYMAN, b. 1794; Abigail d. at Pittsfield, 25 Apr 1865.

x BETSEY TOWN, b. 13 Apr 1797; d. at East Livermore, 20 Feb 1895 at age 97 years, 10 months; m. at East Livermore, 13 May 1846, TRISTRAM TILTON, b. 29 May 1788 son of Ward and Elizabeth (Chase) Tilton; Tristram d. at East Livermore, 21 May 1861. Tristram was first married to Rebecca Chase.
