Biography

JONATHAN BALLARD,[1] born at Oxford, Massachusetts, 4 Mar 1763 son of Ephraim Ballard and Martha Moore;[2][3] Jonathan died at Augusta, Maine, 7 Jun 1838;[4][5] married at Hallowell, 23 Feb 1792,[6] SARAH PIERCE, born at Oxford, 1768 daughter of Eliphalet and Elizabeth (Wheeler) Pierce;[7] Sarah died at Augusta, 31 Jul 1858.[8]

Jonathan Ballard and Sarah Pierce resided in Hallowell/Augusta, Maine. Jonathan operated a sawmill and kept a farm. He was one of the subscribers to contribute to the building of the first courthouse at Hallowell.[9]

On 5 February 1795, there was a great flood of the Kennebec River that swept the house of Jonathan Ballard off its foundation while Jonathan’s wife Sarah and four-day old daughter Hannah were in an upstairs room. They were removed safely on a sleigh.[10]

On 2 December 1805, Jonathan Ballard and Sally Ballard, in consideration of $82, quitclaimed to Asa Pierce all their interest in the homestead farm of Eliphalet Pierce deceased, late of Augusta. On 23 April 1803, Jason Pierce, Sally’s brother, quitclaimed his interest in the estate of Eliphalet Pierce to Jonathan Ballard.[11]

On 10 November 1814, Jonathan Ballard and his wife Sally, in consideration of $300, conveyed to Ephraim Ballard, Jr. land in Augusta on the west side of the Kennebec River containing 30 acres. On 10 October 1816, Jonathan Ballard yeoman of Augusta, in consideration of $250, conveyed to De Lafayette Ballard a tract of land on the went side of the Kennebec River containing 50 acres. On 14 October 1816, Jonathan conveyed to De Lafayette all his undivided part of land in lot number twenty-nine of the second range for payment of $150. On 1 July 1817, Jonathan quitclaimed to De Lafayette, for payment of $100, his right to lots along the Kennebec River.[12]

After Jonathan’s death, Sarah lived in the home of her daughter Hannah and her husband Charles Pinkham, recorded there in 1850.[13]
