WILLIAM ROBERT FRANCIS ATKINS

WILLIAM ROBERT FRANKLIN ATKINS was born on December 27, 1858, at Rochester, Monroe, New York. He was the son of WILLIAM HENRY ATKINS and SOPHIA LENORA FRANKLIN.^[1]

On November 24, 1886, at Wiarton, Bruce, Ontario, he married HANNAH 'Ann' ELEANOR NORRIS, born 1863, in Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of HENRY NORRIS and MARY D. POOL^[2]

There will be general regret in the district west of town over the death of Mr. Wm. R. Atkins, of Poplar Ridge, who passed away on Tuesday night in his 63rd year. Mr. Atkins had not been in good shape the past couple of years, and an operation this spring failed to give him much relief. He was always a hard-working man, and the exposure and labor he has undergone during his life in this country no doubt broke down a good constitution.

Mr. Atkins was born in Rochester, N.Y., and came when a child to Bruce County, Ontario. He came west in 1898, 23 years ago, and homesteaded on the farm on the Sylvan Lake trail which he held to his death. The clearing of that wooded section was a man's job, and Mr. Atkins buckled to it unceasingly; perhaps no man in the district has assisted in clearing up more wood than has Mr. Atkins. He was also a great road man, and the care of the roads in his vicinity was generally in his hands.

He was warmly interested in political and local affairs, always had opinions of his own, and always enjoyed a joke on the other fellow; when the other fellow came back he took it in good part. Mr. and Mrs. Atkins and family were most hospitable and helpful to the newcomers as the district gradually settled up.

It was a great blow to them when they lost their only son, George Francis Atkins, who enlisted with the 89th, and was killed in action in France.

Mrs. Atkins has also been in poor health lately, and in the death of Mr. Atkins she and the family will have sincere sympathy. Mrs. G.E. Woods, Mrs. F. Heanski, and Mrs. J. Lamont, all of Poplar Ridge are the daughters and there are three grand children. Mrs. Patten, Red Deer, is Mr. Atkin's sister, and he had brothers' in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. Mr. Geo. Norris, Poplar Ridge, is a brother of Mrs. Atkins.

The funeral took place from the home on Thursday afternoon and was largely attended. There were many floral tributes from the family, friends, and neighbors...
