Bessie was born January 6, 1896 in Mount Vernon, Monroe, Tennessee, United States to the parents of Thomas Gilford (Atkinson) Atkins ( S-O-N was eventually dropped from the Atkinson name. My grandfather, Horace James Atkins, Thomas Gilford Atkinson's son, was always known to me as an Atkins.) and Vina (Mason) Atkins. They had nine (9) children together.^[1]

In 1900, Bessie was a toddler with six (6) older siblings living in Mount Vernon, Monroe, Tennessee, United States with her parents.^[2]

On May 9, 1915, Bessie married Luther Gilbert Wimberley in Monroe, Tennessee, United States.^[3]
