When Joseph William Atkins was born on 25 May 1893, in Mount Vernon, Monroe, Tennessee, United States, his father, Thomas Gilford Atkins, was 40 and his mother, Vina Mason, was 33.[1]

In 1900, Joseph was living with his parents and six (6) siblings in Mount Vernon, Monroe, Tennessee, United States.[2]

Joseph married Sarah Loretta Roberts on September 25, 1910 in Monroe, Tennessee, United States.[3]

He had at least 2 sons and 2 daughters with Sarah Loretta Roberts.[4]

He lived in Civil District 4, Monroe, Tennessee, United States in 1920[5] and Civil District 4, Hamilton, Tennessee, United States in 1930.[6]

He died on 19 July 1968, in Monroe, Tennessee, United States, at the age of 75,[7] and was buried in New Providence Cemetery, Tellico Plains, Monroe County, Tennessee USA.[8]

"Robert William Atkins' father is my great-great grandfather. His brother, Horace Atkins, is my great-grandfather, husband of Ella Tate Atkins, for whom I named my son, Robinson Tate Lindsay."[9]

Joe and Sallie Roberts Atkins spent many years of their lives together traveling from place to place. Joe held tent revivals all over the south. Sallie traveled with him and helped him with his reading. He also was pastor of several churches , among those being Nothey Creek, Conasauga, and People's Temple. They were parents of 5 Anna Lee who married Eugene Jones both taught school in Monroe County, Tennessee until they retired. They have one son, Billie Joe, a retired teacher, who lives in Chattanooga. Alice married Lex Burgess and taught school at Lick Creek. She and Lex had 4 children, Billie Lex (Vonore, Monroe, Tennessee, Larry (Cherry Log, GA), Betty (Tellico, Monroe, Tennessee), and Carol who has taught many years at Tellico High School, Monroe, TN.
