Biography

Alexander was born April 14, 1834 in Mississippi. He was the son of Spencer Atkins and Milly Franks. He married Mary Elander Coleman before 1855. Something is wrong with the 1880 Census, it shows Millie as being mother, which she is the mother of Alexander Atkins, but he is not on the same page. Somehow the family has been split apart. Alexander Adkins is listed on the 1880 Lamar, AL p8D T17 R16, but his wife (Mary E. Adkins, his children (Burtie Adkins & Mary T. Adkins) and mother (Millie Adkins) are listed on 1880 Lamar, AL p15C T17 R16. He passed away December 31, 1912 in Lamar County, Alabama. He is buried at Ebenezer Cemetery, Fernbank, Lamar County, Alabama.[1]

Atkins on November 8, 1859, and so ordered on November 22, 1859, and established as Probate No. 15 in the records of Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. Transcribed on April 10, 1998, by Ed Crump, Jr.
"To the Honorable the Judge of the 17th Judicial District of the State of Louisiana holding sessions in and for the Parish of Claiborne. The petitioner William B. Atkins a resident of the parish of Claiborne State of Louisiana with respect represents unto your Honor that Thomas J. Atkins late of your said parish and state has departed this life leaving considerable property, consisting of land, personal property - rights - and audits - etc. unadministered. This petitioner avers, that it is for the interest of all parties concerned that there should be an administrator appointed for the succession of said Thomas J. Atkins deceased. This petitioner further avers that his wife is the sister of said deceased and his nearest relative in this parish. The premises considered the petitioner prays that after due and legal notice according to law that he beappointed administrator of the succession and estate of said Thomas J. Atkins deceased. The petitioner further prays that a true and correct inventory and appraisement of all property - both real andpersonal rights and audits belonging to said succession be made according to law. "State of Louisiana, Parish of Claiborne: Whereas due notice has been given by public action according to law, of the filing of this application & no opposition having been made it is ordered that W. Cover of Folio: "Succession of Thomas J. Atkins; Application for Administration: I certify the within has been duly recorded in Probate Records (C) Page - Given unto my hand and seal this 16th Feb 1860 B R Coleman Filed November 8, 1859; Dy Clk, Edward L. Dyer, Dy Clk D C"
It is well documented that William B. Atkins' wife was Martha Anne Atkins. These Succession records of Thomas J. Atkins prove that Martha Anne Atkins was his sister, and therefore, a daughter of Spencer and Milly Atkins! The Succession records name his other heirs, and certified copies of some of those documents have been made. One was a Power of Attorney authorizing Jeptha Seay, husband of Metilda Atkins to receive the funds in the estate of Thomas J. Atkins on behalf of the family members in Fayette County, Alabama. Signers of the Power of Attorney were Spencer Atkins, Milly Atkins, Sarah [Atkins] Franks, Samuel Franks, Matilda Seay, Joel Atkins, Martin Atkins, Mary A B Stratton, H. H. Stratton, W. C. Atkins, and Alexander Atkins. The fact that his parents and siblings were his lawful heirs indicates that he was not married, and did not have any children. [2]
