Born into slavery in Barnwell County, South Carolina, Rev. Alfred Hair is the founding Patriarch of the Hair family of South Carolina, Fort Pierce, FL and New York, NY. Rev. Hair had married twice and is the father of a total of nineteen children.
In the 1870 Federal Census for Williston Township in Barnwell County, South Carolina[1], Violet Askew was listed at the top of her household of eight. Included were her children Alfred Hair, Ann Askew, Nelson Askew, Caroline Askew and William Askew as well as Louisa Johnson and Dora Johnson of a currently unknown association. All in the household were born in South Carolina.
Here in 1870, Alfred Hair is the oldest male in the household at 17 and works on the farm with his mother Violet Askew who is 35. Though he is listed with the last name of Askew, it is known that by the 1880 census, he takes the last name of Hair following his confirmed relation to planter John Lafayette Hair (1828-1897).
Alfred’s remaining brothers are Nelson Askew, 10, and William Askew who is 2. Violet’s daughters in the household are Ann Askew, 15 and Caroline Askew, 4, known as Carrie here.
In the 1880 Federal Census for Blackville Township in Barnwell County, South Carolina[2], Alfred Hair was listed as the head of his household of six. Included was his wife, Ella Butler, two sons, Alfred Hair and Wesley Hair and two daughters, Henrietta Hair and Tilly Hair.
In this census, Alfred Hair is 26 years old, married to Ella Butler, who is 21, and works as a farmer. He and his parents were born in South Carolina. He does not indicate whether he can read or write. The children they share are Henrietta Hair, 7, Tilly Hair, 5, Wesley Hair, 3, and Alfred Hair who is 1. Alfred and his children are listed as Mulatto while his wife as Black as Alfred is the child of the planter John Lafayette Hair (1828-1897). The entire family and their respective parents were all from South Carolina.
