Ella (Butler) Hair is a part of US Black heritage.

Born into slavery in Barnwell County, South Carolina, Ella Butler was the first wife of Rev. Alfred Hair and the mother of eight, many of whom migrated to New York City.

1880 Census

In the 1880 Federal Census for Blackville Township in Barnwell County, South Carolina[1], Alfred Hair was listed as the head of his household of six. Included was his wife, Ella Butler, two sons, Alfred Hair and Wesley Hair and two daughters, Henrietta Hair and Tilly Hair.

In this census, Ella Butler is 21 years old, married to Alfred Hair, who is 26, and works on the farm. She and her parents were born in South Carolina. She indicates she cannot read or write. Their children are Henrietta Hair, 7, Tilly Hair, 5, Wesley Hair, 3, and Alfred Hair who is 1.
