Included were her children Alfred Hair, Ann Askew, Nelson Askew, Caroline Askew and William Askew as well as Louisa Johnson and Dora Johnson of a currently unknown association. All in the household were born in South Carolina. Violet Askew is 35 years old and works on the farm. She can neither read nor write. With her lives her son, Alfred Hair who is 17, and also works on the farm. Alfred’s brothers are Nelson Askew, 10, and William Askew who is 2. Violet’s daughters in the household are Ann Askew, 15 and Caroline Askew, 4, known as Carrie here. As the oldest girl, it seems Ann is left to keep house with her younger siblings.
In the 1880 Federal Census for Blackville Township in Barnwell County, South Carolina[2], Violet Askew was the head of her household of five. Included are her children Nelson Askew, Caroline Askew, William Askew and Viola Askew. All in the household were born in South Carolina. In this census, Violet Askew is 45 years old and works on the farm with the assistance of her son Nelson Askew who is 17. Neither can read nor write. It is known Nelson will later take on the last name of Minus. Violet’s remaining children in the home are Caroline Askew, 15, William Askew, 12 and Viola Askew, who is 10. All three children attend school while also working on the farm.
