Athol was educated at the Melbourne Grammar School, where he was a prefect and in the rowing, football and athletics teams. He was a grandson of the late Captain T. J. Parker (Huddart, Parker and Co.), and he was in the office of that firm when he enlisted in the AIF in August 1914.[4][5] Participating in the Gallipoli campaign, Athol was shot four times in the first 10 days after the Anzac Cove landing.[6]
He died in Egypt in 1917, on a training run after his plane's engine cut out.[4][6]
