George Abel was born 13 Apr 1891 in Echt, Aberdeenshire, to George Abel and Mary Shepherd. In the 1901 census George is living with his parents and siblings at Mennecht Cottage in Echt. George, age 18, a Farm Labourer may have immigrated to Canada in 1909 on the SS Pretonian, steerage section, headed to Moose (2 unk words but probably Moosomine, Sas)[1]. The data fits but I cannot be sure it is this George Abel. In the 1911 census, George is boarding with the Cobeard and Sarah Reavie family in Qu'Appelle Sub-Districts 1-33, Saskatchewan, along with 8 other boarders who are also labourers[2]. I am fairly certain this is the right George, shows his birthday as Apr 1891 from Scotland.
On Feb 7, 1924, George Abel crossed the border from Canada into the United States at Noyes, Minnesota. I do not know how George and Alice Isabelle Bristol met or when they married but they had children born in Moosomine, Saskatchewan. Alice Isabelle also crossed the border in 1924 but from Winnipeg, Canada to Vermont in the United States. I am speculating they were married in Canada and the family was together when the 1930 census was taken. George, age 40, a Line Foreman for the Telephone Company, and Alice I, married, were living in North Chicago, Lake, Illinois with their children Almond G, age 10, and Mary B age 8[3].
In the 1940 census, George, age 49, a line foreman for the telephone company, is living on Johnston Av in Libertyville ILL with his wife Alice Isabelle 44 and their two children Almond G age 20 and Mary B age 18. George registered for the Draft about 1942, age 51, and gave his address as 117 Johnson Av in Libertyville, Lake, Illinois. He indicated he worked for the Illinois Bell Telephone Company at 125 E Church St in Libertyville, ILL[4].
On Feb 12, 1943 George Abel became a Naturalized US Citizen. On 17 Sep 1974 George died and is buried in Kuykendall Cemetery, Searcy County, Arkansas. His wife died 2 years later.
