Maria Zähringer was born in 1828[1] as second child of Anton Zähringer and his wife Catharina Merz in Vöhrenbach, Baden.
In 1858 she worked as an embroiderer in Sentheim, Alsace, and got married to Louis Baumgartner (* 1 Nov 1826 in Bourbach le bas).[2] The couple had a son of same name born on 2 June 1859.[3]
On 23 Apr 1860 the three of them immigrated to the United States in New York on board the ship Hammonia coming from Hamburg.[4]
The 1870 census shows the family living in Eaton in Manitovoc County, Wisconsin together with her father.[5]
She passed away in 1876 at 47 years.[6] Her husband survived her by 24 years.[7]
FindAGrave shows a marker that was placed on the grave in 2011 by the St. Nazianz Area Historical Society. It says:
The death date is backed up by a record in the death index.[6] FindAGrave also refers to "death record Manitowoc 1-198".
Another record at FamilySearch mentions her age at death as 47,[9] which implies a birth around 1829.
Louis Falge in his history book about Manitowoc County has her as well passing away with 47 years, but already in 1874, which leads to a birth in 1827, but still not in 1823/1824 as the marker implies. He also knew that "Miss Mary Zahringer" was "a daughter of Anton Zahringer, whose occupation it was to decorate the faces of clocks." [10] The 1870 census record has a calculated birth year of 1828 for her and 1794 for her father. [5]
FindAGrave mentions the village of Altglashütten as her birth place. In Neuglashütten, a village that belongs to the parish of Altglashütten one finds the birth of a Maria Zähringer on 25 December 1823, just like the marker implies. Her parents are Anton Zähringer (match!) and Magdalena Wasmer. Their occupation is "Bauersleute" meaning farmers, so no clock painting here, at least not as main occupation.[11] Via marriage record[12] one finds Antons birth, that was in 1885.[13] Nine years of age difference for him is a lot, even for a census.
But there's more: The family book for the neighbouring village of Lenzkirch has this particular Maria Zähringer as second wife of Josef Hofmann (clock maker and merchant) including her birthdate and her death in 1901.[14]
While separating these obviously two persons in FamilySearch's FamilyTree the author received a suggestion for a Maria Zähringer that was born 1828 in Vöhrenbach,[1] about 50 km away from Altglashütten. Her father was named Anton, at the baptism of some of his children he was referred to as "Schildmaker" (clock cover painter) and basically all Zähringer that are found in St. Nazianz' early history[15] can be found as his children.
Final puzzle piece is the marriage record of Maria and Louis Baumgartner of 28 Sep 1856 in Sentheim, Alsace. There one can clearly read the names of her parents.[2]
