Genealogical Research

My father researched his ancestors in the 1970s, and the documents he collected from parish registers went back to the Thirty Years War. I copied this as an interested teenager into notebooks which I later transferred into a software program, and I've been at expanding my family tree, on and off, ever since. I discovered WikiTree end of 2017 and was immediately hooked.

In addition to working on profiles of my wider family and their communities, I'm also adding the "Died Young" template and appropriate categorization to profiles of those who died in infancy or childhood (tag "Remember the Children").

Since end of 2022, through my work as a Connector, I'm fascinated by Lords and Ladies of the Rim and the underlying concepts developed by Bernard Vatant and his team.

In January 2024, I started the Ostermann Name Study.

Most helpful for breaking through brick walls so far have been the family books (Ortsfamilienbücher, short OFB) of the Museumsverein Uelzen. I've listed those which I own, some also from other regions and publishers, under Wikitree's German Project page on German Family Books.

An example of puzzling together a biography from four OFB sources, that I’m particularly proud of, is Heinrich Christian Meyer (1802-1867).

Ancestor Table

I've seen this at cousin Steven's profile page and wanted to create one of my own.

There are 4094 total possible ancestors within 11 generations (due to pedigree collapse, these are often not 4094 distinct persons). As of March 2024, I have identified 416 (or 10.16%) of them. Going back 15 generations, that number increases to just over 500 but the percentage drops to less than one percent.

Ancestor Generation # of Possible Ancestors # of Identified Ancestors  % of Identified Ancestors Birth Year Range
Parents 2 2 100% 1943-1945
Grandparents 4 4 100% 1914-1923
Great-grandparents 8 8 100% 1879-1902
2nd great-grandparents 16 15 93.75% 1836-1875
3rd great-grandparents 32 30 93.75% 1796-1850
4th great-grandparents 64 50 78.13% 1752-1825
5th great-grandparents 128 57 44.53% 1717-1788
6th great-grandparents 256 57* 22.26% 1680-1739
7th great-grandparents 512 80* 15.62% 1658-1725
8th great-grandparents 1024 58* 5.66% 1622-1679
9th great-grandparents 2048 55* 2.69% 1599-1649

Numbers marked with "*" (from the 8th generation upwards) indicate that some ancestors occur two or more times in different slots of my tree, i.e. those 57 persons who are my 6th great-grandparents are not 57 distinct persons. This becomes obvious when you consider that, for example, my paternal grandparents were 7th cousins once removed. Or even closer, my 4GGP A.C.Schmidt-P.H.Harms were first cousins, i.e. their grandparents (my 6GGP) appear at least twice in my ancestral tree.

Ahnenliste meiner Kinder

Since March of 2024, I've been working on Ahnenliste meiner Kinder (Ancestors' List for my children) which will become the basis for an expanded and updated Ancestor Table.

Relations and Connections

I'm glad that a number of relatives responded to my invitations, among them:

WikiTreer Relatives

Through my ancestors in the Bienenbüttel area (on my father's side), I am related to the following WikiTreers:

Through my 12GGF Nicolaus Wantzleben (on my mother's side), I am related to the following WikiTreers:

I am also related to WikiTreer André through my second cousin David's marriage to his sister.

The following friends and colleagues are also on WikiTree:

Featured and Notable Relatives

  • first and foremost, 3C6R to Johanna Stegen, the heroine of Lüneburg during the Napoleonic Wars, via Hinrich Stegen
  • 6C7R to featured socialist writer Jenny (von Westphalen) Marx via Nicolaus Wantzleben; and 7C6R to her notable daughters: socialist writer Jenny Longuet, French translator Laura Lafargue and socialist activist Eleanor Marx Aveling
  • first German MLB player George Heubel, 6C7R via Nicolaus Wantzleben

DNA comparisons

Not many of my WikiTreer relatives (see subsection above) have tested their DNA. For those who did, comparison results are comparatively weak, e.g. 5C1R Jeff Jahn:

  • GEDmatch test match between Stegen-15 JR2069839 and Jahn-37 A283880. Largest segment = 3.9 cM; Total Half-Match segments (HIR) 13.8cM (0.385%); 4 shared segments found for this comparison. 51.305% of the 199654 SNPs used for this comparison are full identical.

Advance Directive

In the event of my untimely demise (after all, eternity is not an endless temporal duration but rather untimeliness - heed Wittgenstein's Tractatus, esp. section 6.4311!), I herewith decree that all of my private profiles should be transferred to those mentioned above (under Relations and Connections, and under WikiTreer Relatives), whether or not they are currently on the trusted lists.

Would it be beneficial for us to categorize farmers of the Uelzen area? I don't think a specific category exists yet, just one for Germany. I can get it set up.
posted by Steven Greenwood
Hm, not sure. I haven't done much categorization by occupation, at least not consistently. If you consider it relevant, please go ahead.

Thank you Oliver for doing some research on my "Z" roots!

You did provide me with some very interesting facts that I did not know. Funny, have now learned about origins of the name meaning "bricklayer." My mother's paternal side. But on her mother's side, stonemason. Thanks again.

Thanks for the updates to Landkreis Uelzen in the last day. I have a question as to why some placenames are getting categories removed though? Are they not big enough or unique enough to warrant their own categories, or did no one live at those locations?
posted by Steven Greenwood
I‘ve read in some guidelines (which I can’t find right now) that empty categories, i.e. with neither person profiles nor subcategories, are to be deleted. Presumably, that’s done by a bot, so arguing against it is no use … ;-)
posted by Oliver Stegen PhD
Oh okay, however we are actively on the lookout for individuals in those locations and then they would be created, yes?

A good mine for searching is the migrant database at ofb.genealogy.net where I found the second Vorlop on WikiTree and the first one born in Category:Emern, Niedersachsen, and I also just succeeded in connecting him via his father-in-law. Yay!!!

I'll definitely consider this. Thanks.

Wanted to ask you about https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Gr%C3%BCnhagen%2C_Niedersachsen. I think a lot of those profiles within the disambiguation category need to be moved to the Uelzen subcategory, but I wanted to check with you first.
posted by Steven Greenwood
I don't understand why this needs a disambiguation page. I cannot find a second village of Grünhagen in Kreis Celle, neither on Google Maps nor in Wikipedia, cf. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gr%C3%BCnhagen. To me it looks like the Category: Grünhagen, Celle, Niedersachsen should be deleted and the remaining two categories conflated into one.
posted by Oliver Stegen PhD
Well now, I'm glad we caught that.

OMG, you broke a BIG brick wall for me! I had been looking for that connection between Peter Jürgen Gause and the existing known Gauses of 1700s Hohenbostel and you found the connection! I cannot thank you enough!

Glad to be of help. Thanks are due to genealogist Eberhard Behnke who pointed me to his book (co-authored with deceased Heinrich Porth) "Bienenbüttel Ortsfamilenbuch 1642-1920". It's described at https://www.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de/item/6L2T2YYQ76B77PERXVLJFWKPME4LUYCE

It used to be available for sale, so I got my own copy. Alas, I can no longer find order forms online.

Me wonders if it might be floating around some old German bookstore. Oh the possibilities for when I finally get to Uelzen myself.
