My father researched his ancestors in the 1970s, and the documents he collected from parish registers went back to the Thirty Years War. I copied this as an interested teenager into notebooks which I later transferred into a software program, and I've been at expanding my family tree, on and off, ever since. I discovered WikiTree end of 2017 and was immediately hooked.
In addition to working on profiles of my wider family and their communities, I'm also adding the "Died Young" template and appropriate categorization to profiles of those who died in infancy or childhood (tag "Remember the Children").
Since end of 2022, through my work as a Connector, I'm fascinated by Lords and Ladies of the Rim and the underlying concepts developed by Bernard Vatant and his team.
In January 2024, I started the Ostermann Name Study.

Contribution Milestones:
Most helpful for breaking through brick walls so far have been the family books (Ortsfamilienbücher, short OFB) of the Museumsverein Uelzen. I've listed those which I own, some also from other regions and publishers, under Wikitree's German Project page on German Family Books.
An example of puzzling together a biography from four OFB sources, that I’m particularly proud of, is Heinrich Christian Meyer (1802-1867).
I've seen this at cousin Steven's profile page and wanted to create one of my own.
There are 4094 total possible ancestors within 11 generations (due to pedigree collapse, these are often not 4094 distinct persons). As of March 2024, I have identified 416 (or 10.16%) of them. Going back 15 generations, that number increases to just over 500 but the percentage drops to less than one percent.
Ancestor Generation | # of Possible Ancestors | # of Identified Ancestors | % of Identified Ancestors | Birth Year Range |
---|---|---|---|---|
Parents | 2 | 2 | 100% | 1943-1945 |
Grandparents | 4 | 4 | 100% | 1914-1923 |
Great-grandparents | 8 | 8 | 100% | 1879-1902 |
2nd great-grandparents | 16 | 15 | 93.75% | 1836-1875 |
3rd great-grandparents | 32 | 30 | 93.75% | 1796-1850 |
4th great-grandparents | 64 | 50 | 78.13% | 1752-1825 |
5th great-grandparents | 128 | 57 | 44.53% | 1717-1788 |
6th great-grandparents | 256 | 57* | 22.26% | 1680-1739 |
7th great-grandparents | 512 | 80* | 15.62% | 1658-1725 |
8th great-grandparents | 1024 | 58* | 5.66% | 1622-1679 |
9th great-grandparents | 2048 | 55* | 2.69% | 1599-1649 |
Numbers marked with "*" (from the 8th generation upwards) indicate that some ancestors occur two or more times in different slots of my tree, i.e. those 57 persons who are my 6th great-grandparents are not 57 distinct persons. This becomes obvious when you consider that, for example, my paternal grandparents were 7th cousins once removed. Or even closer, my 4GGP A.C.Schmidt-P.H.Harms were first cousins, i.e. their grandparents (my 6GGP) appear at least twice in my ancestral tree.
Since March of 2024, I've been working on Ahnenliste meiner Kinder (Ancestors' List for my children) which will become the basis for an expanded and updated Ancestor Table.
I'm glad that a number of relatives responded to my invitations, among them:
Through my ancestors in the Bienenbüttel area (on my father's side), I am related to the following WikiTreers:
Through my 12GGF Nicolaus Wantzleben (on my mother's side), I am related to the following WikiTreers:
I am also related to WikiTreer André through my second cousin David's marriage to his sister.
The following friends and colleagues are also on WikiTree:
Not many of my WikiTreer relatives (see subsection above) have tested their DNA. For those who did, comparison results are comparatively weak, e.g. 5C1R Jeff Jahn:
In the event of my untimely demise (after all, eternity is not an endless temporal duration but rather untimeliness - heed Wittgenstein's Tractatus, esp. section 6.4311!), I herewith decree that all of my private profiles should be transferred to those mentioned above (under Relations and Connections, and under WikiTreer Relatives), whether or not they are currently on the trusted lists.

You did provide me with some very interesting facts that I did not know. Funny, have now learned about origins of the name meaning "bricklayer." My mother's paternal side. But on her mother's side, stonemason. Thanks again.

It used to be available for sale, so I got my own copy. Alas, I can no longer find order forms online.
