It is my privilege to share my life (and Family Group Sheet!) with my wife and our four children. I became interested in my family tree when I was ten years old, patiently listening to many conversations between my father and various distant relatives. I began my own active research in 2006 and am looking forward to the time when my great grandchildren and their cousins are the ones asking me the questions!

Cultural Background

John Rosser has Irish ancestors.

John Rosser has Welsh ancestors.

John Rosser has Scottish Ancestors.
English flag
John Rosser has English ancestors.

I am Australian (between 4th-7th generation): all of my direct line ancestors had arrived in the colonies by 1860; a few were here before 1800.

However my Aussie 'tree' was ultimately 'transplanted' from British 'stock' - I claim descent from Welsh, Irish, Scottish and English migrants. These include convicts and soldiers (from before and after the 3rd Fleet), free settlers and economic migrants...on their shoulders I stand!

Hello John,

We recently left a message on your profile to check in with the Profile Improvement Project (PIP). Would you like to continue with the Project? If so, please respond to let us know. We would also like to hear from you with any ideas or suggestions.

If we don’t hear from you within 14 days we will remove you from the Project. You're welcome to rejoin the project with a quick Voyage refresher.

Hello John,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in. The Project operates in a team structure with these participant PIP Teams -- The Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and three Biography Teams. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team, working on profiles from your watchlist and other profiles that interest you. The other two Biography Teams work on Abandoned and Popular profiles from the provided lists. Please let us know if you are content with your current Team or would like to change to one of the others.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup. We use the WikiTree Discord server #profile-improvement channel for our project. Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

Hi John. Thank you for adding exact birth and marriage dates and a precise birth location to the profile Barlow-6786. However, these are not directly supported by the references on the NSW BDM site. What additional sources do you have for this information? I also look forward to seeing details of the children you mention, who are presumably no longer living.

I have my own preferred style for the profiles I manage, and I do not use stickers.

Hi John,

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.

Over the past year, Australia Project members have been more active on Discord. We're finding it a fun way to communicate as a project. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, let us know, and we can send you an invite link to the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located. It's a great way to communicate with other members on your project team/s, or for any general questions.

We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi John!

You’re a member of Southern Cross Stars for the 2023 WikiTree Source-a-Thon. Thanks for choosing us! Your Bib is 778 if you want to download your Bib and create a sticker. We kick off this evening. The times for starting and finishing for various locations in Australia is at Southern Cross Stars Chat.

There is Source-a-Thon ‘how to’ information and some lists of unsourced profiles to work on at Southern Cross Stars, but you can work on any unsourced profiles that you want. You’ll find resources relevant to Australia under Australia Project Resources. We'd love to see you on the team Discord channel. If you haven't yet joined Discord, see Help:Discord.

I’m always happy to receive a direct message if you have any other questions, or need help with anything. Have a great fun weekend :-) Gillian, your Team Captain!

Hi John,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

G'day, John. Thank you for all your past work with the Australia Project! This is just to touch base with you as you may not be aware that Project Australia has been restructuring some of our Teams, specifically what was under "Profile Improvers". We've decided to split into four related but separate teams underneath the "umbrella" of Profile Improvement: namely, Sourcerers, Data Doctors, Biography Builders, and Connectors & Arborists. As your name is on the current Improvers Team member list, we've placed you on the teams as indicated by your stated interests (or all of them if nothing is indicated). If you'd like to continue as things are, there's no need to respond in any way (although you are more than welcome to do so). If you'd like to change, add, or subtract a team (or teams), you could let us know which one or more of the new Teams you'd like to continue with going forward by replying to this message, editing in (or out) your area(s) of interest on the relevant page(s), or contacting me by private message (or on discord — where each Team now has its own channel on the WikiAustralia server). Looking forward to working with you! (If you've already made changes, feel free to ignore this message.)

Hi John,

It's time for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. Thank you so much for contributing to the project and Australian profiles on WikiTree during the last year. We really appreciate you!

If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.

Hello John,

We wrote to you about the check-in for Profile Improvement Project (PIP) several weeks ago. Would you like to continue in Biography Team Level 1 where we have placed you? That's the Team that works on improving profiles from both your own watchlist and projects you are involved with to Level 1 of the PIP Profile Standards.

If you do not wish to participate in the Project, please let us know. If we don’t hear from you within 7 days we will remove you from the Project, but we will welcome you back at any time. We would like to hear from you with any ideas or suggestions.

Hi John,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Jen, sorry I missed the check-in - I'd like to stay involved with the Ireland project please!

The Irish Diaspora team (AUS/NZ) seems the best fit. My main contributions will be working on profiles for my various Irish ancestors and their descendants. I'm also Team Leader of the "Earl Grey's Famine Orphan Scheme 1848-1850" topic.

Thanks.

Dear John,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing its first annual check-in with our project members. Please review the following and let us know if you are content where we have placed you or would like to be more involved.

We are in the process of transitioning to a team structure. There will be three participant PIP Teams to start -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team who guide new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team. You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team Level 1, working on profiles from your own watchlist and whatever else you find. Biography Teams Levels 2 and 3 will work on designated profiles for notables (Level 3) and everyday people (Level 2). Please let us know if you would like to help with another Team.

You joined the Project before the Voyage started in late 2018. We would like to invite you to consider a "fast track" Voyage, especially if you would like to work at a higher level on the Biography Team. If you’re interested, choose a profile ‘’’from your own watchlist’’’ that you have completed to the best of your ability and compare it to the Voyage Biography Standards. If your profile is at Level 2 or better, include a link to the profile in your response to this check-in for a “fast track” review.

We would also like to invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (When you request to join our GoogleGroup, please be sure to include your Wiki ID). Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements. You will find more information on the GoogleGroup.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project and WikiTree. The Project’s mission is to:

Make profiles beautiful! We clean up messy biography sections and sources, and try to set standards for attractive, useful, and well-written biographies, starting with those we manage.

We know you’re working on profiles *smile* We would like to hear about successes you’ve had toward the Project’s goals. We would also appreciate any feedback you might have to help us improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or privately via private message to either of us.

Sincerely,

Please could you reply to this message, to let us know if you would like to stay on in the project and if you are happy with your current role and team involvement. If you would like to do something additional or different, take a look on the Australia Project page to see what other options there are.

It would also be great to get any feedback or suggestions that you have to improve the project.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello John. My personal profile has volunteered information that we are 14 degrees apart in the Wikitree. Nothing very close. Several marriages. Two key links of the chain are Friedrich Schrapel and his son, Friedrich Wilhelm Schrapel, who farmed near Maitland in South Australia. Cheers, Steve

P.S. Another common interest. 2 of my GG-grandmothers were Earl Grey Orphans.

Hi John

As I have recently taken-on the role as the NSW Team Leader I thought I would just drop a quick note to thank you and to seek your input.

Firstly, I would love to know if there are any areas that you have an interest in looking at. Some of them might already be listed on the Free Space Page: Australia, Project Management - Proposed New Topics.

Secondly, I would love to know how you would prefer to be engaged and kept up-to-date. I would prefer to keep this as simple as possible and generating minimal emails etc. (if you’re like me you already receive too many!). Whatever your preferences are would be fine.

Thanks in advance
