Catherine [1] [2] [3] [4] Charlotte [2] [3] [4] MARSDEN [1] [2] [4], daughter of Jeremiah Henry MARSDEN [1] [2] [4] and Margaret FITZGERALD [1] [2] [4], was born on 27 December 1854 [1], at Rushworth [1] [2], Victoria (registered 29 December 1854 at Rushworth, Waranga [1]).
Catherine, with her parents and her sister Jane, moved to Longwood, Victoria, and over the next eleven years her family had grown to include a further seven siblings. [5]
Tragedy struck in late 1866, when Catherine's father died of a stroke, seemingly the result of excessive drinking, and Catherine's mother, who had apparently been suffering from poor mental health, was unable to cope. Within the fortnight, the local Police Magistrate ruled that six of Catherine's younger siblings were to become wards of the State, on the grounds of neglect, and were sent away to the Industrial School. A few weeks later, her youngest brother died of dysentery. [6]
By 1873, it seems that Catherine had moved to Benalla, Victoria, and had found employment as a maidservant. [7]
Catherine married Richard Walters ROSSER [2] [4] [8] on 13 January 1874 [2], at Benalla [2] [4] [8], Victoria (registered in 1874 at Benalla, Victoria [2]). Richard, a widower [2] with three children [8], had been working as a sawyer [2] at 'Mulwaly' [2], near Corowa, New South Wales. The ceremony was conducted by William GOULD (Minister, Primitive Methodist church), at the residence of Mr Field; witnesses were James FIELD and Sarah FIELD. [2]
Richard and Catherine returned to farming in the Corowa/Wahgunyah district along the Murray River [9], and by 1913 were living in Hay Street, Corowa [3].
Catherine was widowed in 1921. [8]
Catherine died, aged 78, on 5 September 1933 [4] , at 10 Stead Street [4] (her daughter's residence), South Melbourne [4], Victoria ; the cause of death was "arterio-sclerosis and myocarditis" [4] (registered in 1933 at South Melbourne, Victoria [4] ). She was buried on 6 September 1933 [4], at Corowa [4], New South Wales; the undertaker was W. SQUIRES, the funeral was conducted by P. J. O'REILLY (Roman Catholic priest), and the witnesses were F. W. KNIGHT and P. SCHMIDT. [4]
Children:
Catherine and Richard raised 13 children: William, Richard and Mary (Richard's children from his first marriage); Elizabeth, David, 'Jack', Thomas, Edward, Rachel, James, Griffith, 'Kitty' and Gordon. Another daughter (Catherine) had died in infancy.
