I have been interested in genealogy for over 20 years, but in the last coupe of years have done DNA and started taking it a lot more seriously. I am currently going back and correctly sourcing all my information so I can add it to WikiTree. I have yet to join the global tree, but hoping to do so soon.

Biography

Early Life

I came into the world in 1981 during my parents' time in Adelaide River, Northern Territory, Australia. The initial chapters of my life unfolded on a cattle station in the Bachelor region, Northern Territory, Australia.

Around the age of two, my parents went their separate ways, and I moved with my mother to Palmerston, Northern Territory, Australia. In 1991, my mother remarried, welcoming a new sibling into our family in 1993.

My father's work in tourism led to frequent relocations, but I maintained regular contact with him and his side of the family. The pivotal figure in sparking my interest in genealogy was my paternal grandmother, Helen (Howie) Patroni, who, sadly, passed away when I was 17. Before her departure, she entrusted me with her extensive research, including letters from family reunions in the 1990s.

Adult Life

In 2001, I crossed paths with my husband in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, and our union in July 2003 marked the beginning of a journey that involved relocating across Australia due to my husbands role in the Defence Force. Our family expanded with the birth of our daughters in the mid 2000's. After 13 years in the defence force, my husband transitioned, and in 2016, we settled in Whittlesea, Victoria, Australia.

Throughout our nomadic lifestyle, my career in administration, finance, and events took a back seat, while my focus shifted to advocacy work for Dyslexia, Autism and Autoimmune conditions, inspired by my daughters.

Genealogy

The roots of my genealogical journey trace back to the family history documents left by my nana, Helen (Howie) Patroni. Unraveling these records in my mid-twenties revealed that my grandfather, John Harry Patroni (1924-2013), wasn't my biological grandfather — one of those facts known by the family but not talked about. In 2017, my curiosity intensified, and armed with DNA testing, I delved into my paternal heritage, uncovering the mystery of my biological paternal grandfather in November 2018, thanks to the collaboration of newfound cousins and eventually connecting with him to confirm his connection.

Beyond my paternal lineage, I'm on a quest to explore my maternal Dutch heritage. I always knew I would be navigating the challenges posed by an unknown Great Grandfather as my grandmother, Tini (Kroon) Huysing, was always very open about not knowing who her biological father was but being very thankful for having a wonderful step-father. Then through DNA testing the known narrative took an unexpected turn, revealing that my maternal grandfather is not my biological grandfather. So now instead of having one unknown maternal great grandparent, I have three unknown great grandparents and very bare maternal tree. I am trying to solve these unknowns with DNA and research. The language barrier has made it a little harder to work on, but I am in love with the Dutch records and the support of the Dutch WTer's that are so helpful.

Maternal Grandfather Hypothesis

Through DNA analysis, my current hypothesis points to a connection with the lineage of Matthijs van de Wetering (1893-1953) and Maria Westbroek (1893-1982) for my biological maternal grandfather. This hypothesis extends to the belief that he may be a son or grandson of this couple.

Maternal Great-Grandfather Hypothesis

Through DNA analysis, my current hypothesis points to a connection with the lineage of Gerrit van Kampen (1832-1907) and Fennetje Bleijenberg (1837-1894) with them as the potential parents or grandparents of Tini (Kroon) Huysing's biological father.

I first took a 23andMe DNA Test in 2017, I soon realised that I would need to also take an Ancestry DNA Test and did that in 2018. I have since also taken a My Heritage Test. I have uploaded my DNA where ever possible.

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by an autosomal AncestryDNA test match between Maree (Patroni) Evans and TP, her father (direct ancestor). Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: Parent/Child, based on sharing 3459 cM across 30 segments.
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Maree (Patroni) Evans and her paternal half aunt LMP. Their most recent common ancestor is Helen (Howie) Patroni. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 1st Cousin based on sharing 791 cM across 29 segments: Confidence: 93%
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by an AncestryDNA test match between Maree (Patroni) Evans and her paternal half aunt WAP. Their most recent common ancestor is Helen (Howie) Patroni. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 1st Cousin based on sharing 876 cM across 31 segments: Confidence: 99%
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by an autosomal AncestryDNA test match between Maree (Patroni) Evans and GW, her 2nd cousin 1x removed. Their most-recent common ancestors are Patrick Harkins and Bridget Cronin, the great great grandparents of Maree (Patroni) Evans and great grandparents of GW. Predicted relationship from AncestryDNA: 2nd Cousin, based on sharing 217 cM across 6 segments.
  • Paternal relationship is confirmed by a triangulated group on MyHeritageDNA who share a 24 cM segment on chromosome 14, consisting of Maree (Patroni) Evans and IC, her 2nd cousin 1x removed, and MS, her 2nd cousin 2x removed. (IC and MS are 2nd cousins 1x removed.) These matches have been independently verified by via the MyHeritage Chromosome Browser. Their most-recent common ancestors are Thomas Jeffcott and Mary Bowden, the 3x great grandparents of Maree (Patroni) Evans and 2x great grandparents of IC and great grandparents of MS.

Hi Jen,

1. Yes I would like to continue, I believe my only team currently is Diaspora team. I would like to stay on that team and join the sub-Team Australia-New Zealand. 2. I am not an overly active member so do not have much of an opinion on this. I think it is fair to expect at least 5 contributions a year. 3. d) I am mainly active in adding lots of descendants of Irish immigrants to Australia, but am working on the actual Irish ancestors where I have enough information. I would estimate over 50 hours on the ancestors and their descendants in the last year. 4. I can't think of anything right now, my main focus has been on Irish Immigrants/Convicts to Australia, it would be good to have a list of the categories we should be using for these profiles.

Hi Jen,

Definitely still interested in working with the Ireland Project, but I have not been overly active recently as I have been focused on other areas.

The teams I am most interested in would be the Australia Diaspora team and probably the Counties Team, focusing mainly on County Tyrone (as that is where I have the most experience) I have ancestors from Counties Louth, Kildare, Cork, Limerick, Kerry, Clare and some unknowns as well and would be happy to learn more in those counties.

As I have not been overly active I can't really comment on things that could be improved, but I will make an effort to be more active.

Personally I prefer discord, but happy to use google groups if needed.

We're so happy to see you are still active on WikiTree and caring about the Dutch profiles. The Dutch Roots Project is looking forward to give the project a new fresh start to put the Dutch in a more prominent place on the WikiTree map. The project is currently managing over 50,000 profiles and the total number of Dutch profiles on WikiTree exceeds 500,000! Within the project we are monitoring the quality of the Dutch profiles and assisting other WikiTreers in producing those profiles. We would love to pick up some other tasks but to do so we need more volunteers. This is why we check in with the members of the DRP to see if you would like to help us expand.

1) Would you like to do some volunteer work for the Dutch Roots Project? 2) If yes, what kind of work would you prefer to do within the Dutch Roots Project? E.g. translating, sourcing, or something else you want to work on?

Hi Gillian,

Thanks for checking in. I definitely would like to stay in the project. I would like to continue in my existing teams, but I am also interested in the categories team and anything to do with DNA Confirmations. I am pretty good with developing procedures/plans so happy to help out with any admin stuff like that as well.

I need to get more involved in some of the teams but I am not always sure how to get involved. Some mini challenges or focus items for each team each month would be a great way to get a better idea of how to help. Or maybe a time each week where we use discord to chat and ask questions get a focused thing done. (Along the lines of Friday Date Night).

I have loved how much I have learned already and look forward to learn more from all the members.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the welcome. I am slowly getting my head around WikiTree and getting my information added. My current areas of interest are the locations of Crookwell, Binda, Dubbo and Goulburn but I will have more as I do further research, particularly when I get to my husbands side of the family.

I'll have a look through the links you provided and ask any questions I have as they arise.

For a great start of the spring this year we will have a Spring Clean-a-Thon again. PS To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.
