Bridget's mother, Ellen, remarried on 30 Nov 1866 to Denis O'Sullivan in Inagh, County Clare, Ireland. It is not known what happened to her father. [6]
On 18 Jan 1882, Bridget and her older sister Mary (also known as Maria) departed Plymouth, England together aboard the RMS Almora headed for Australia. The Almora stopped in Lisbon, Portugal, Port Said, Egypt, Colombo, Sri Lanka and Jakarta, Indonesia (known as Batavia at the time) along the way. The sisters eventually disembarked on the 17 March 1882 in Bowen, Queensland, Australia. [1][2][3][4][7][8][9][10][11][12]
Both girls headed south from here, how and when is not known. Maria ended up in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia, whilst Bridget continued south on to Ipswich, Queensland Australia.
In 1886 Bridget had a son, Edward, with Patrick Harkins. They were not married at the time and when Edward was about 7 months old, on 23 Dec 1886, Bridget charged Patrick with child desertion. Patrick pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay 10s per week for twelve months. [13][14][3]
At some point over the following couple of years Bridget and Patrick must have reconciled as they married in St Mary's Presbytery in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia on 19 Jun 1889. The marriage was witnessed by Patrick's brother, Michael Patrick Harkins, and his mother, Johanna Harkins. [15][16][17][18][3][5]
Patrick and Bridget had eight children together; [18][3][5]

Eileen - 12 Mar 1903, Ipswich, Queensland Australia. [24]
Vera - 1 Aug 1909, Ipswich, Queensland Australia. [26]
Bridget & Patrick lived in Chant Street, Basin Pocket, Queensland, Australia from 1903. Some of Patrick's family were also registered as living in Chant Street at this time. It's possible they were living together. [27][28][29][30][31]
In 1909, Bridget and Patrick moved to Wyman Street, Basin Pocket, Queensland, Australia. Patrick's brothers and wives also lived in Wyman Street at this time. It would appear they all moved together. [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46]
In July 1912, Patrick had an incident at work that turned out fatal. He passed on 14 July 1912 from Meningitis, possibly traumatic meningitis sustained at work. This left Bridget a widow with six children dependant on her. In September 1912, Bridget sued Patrick's employer, Barbat & Sons for compensation over his death. The case was heard on 7 Oct 1912, and the judge determined that the employers were not at fault. [47][48][49][18]
In October 1917 a Mrs Harkins bought an allotment at Basin Pocket from Mr Neill. All three Harkins brothers were deceased by this point and the wives all widows, it is not known which one bought the allotment but not long after this all of them were living in Davidson Street, Basin Pocket, Queensland, Australia. It would appear that one of them bought a property and they all lived together, but it is possible they all had their own property in the same street. [50]
In Nov 1917, Bridget received word that her son, William, had been injured during WW1 in Europe. A few weeks after there is a story in the newspaper that a W.P. Harkins from the same unit as her son had died of his wounds. Shye had not heard from the AIF and wrote to them wanting to know if this was her son. It turned out it wasn't, there just happened to be another man with the same name in his unit. [44][45][46]
On 25 March 1943 Bridget passed away in her home from a Syncopal Attack after 6 months suffering from Chronic Myocarditis. She was buried on 26 March 1943 at Ipswich General Cemetery in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.[3][69][70][71][72][73][74][75]
Research Notes
Birth/Baptism Record: I have searched all of the Inagh Catholic registers and have not been able to find a record of Bridget's birth. Maree Evans
Immigration: The ages of Bridget and Maria are a little off, but I have searched every ship passenger list between 1880 and 1886 and this is the only one with a Bridget Cronin from Inagh, that the age is close. Bridget's mother, Ellen and her husband Denis O'Sullivan and their children came out in 1883 and settled in Rockhampton. I believe maybe Bridget and Maria went ahead of the rest of the family the year before. It is possible this record is incorrect though Maree Evans
