HMS Bramble has also brought the news [4] of the melancholy fate of Mr. Moulton, which we have given in detail elsewhere from the depositions of the two surviving English seamen on board the Paul Jones, taken by Mr. Yule himself at Koepang.

THE CUTTER "PAUL JONES" [5] (1847)
We have extracted from the Singapore Straits Times of the 14th April last, the following particulars of the melancholy fate of our late fellow-colonist Mr. Moulton, and the disasters which befell the Paul Jones,
Moulton Crest . . . . Part of his story: A SETTLER OF 1836 . . . CONQUERING FORTUNE . . . . . . A story of more than passing interest is related in the following extracts from a letter written by an early settler of Western Australia to a friend in England in the year 1836. . . . . It is the story of one upon whom Fortune played more than one sorry trick, involving him in loss of a modest fortune and prospects of greater wealth, and exposing him to shipwreck on the African coast and many subsequent dangers and positions. Nothing daunted, Mr. A. Moulton, the writer of the letter, gathered up a few pecuniary threads still remaining, came to Western Australia, settled down in the Canning district, and after two years was able to write the letter from which the following extracts are taken . . . . .

Ship Arrival (Hello John, 20/11/2003 2:06 PM) I am researching the Moulton family from Australia and have an Abraham Moulton who married Mary Matthews in Southhampton, England while he was serving in the 26th Regiment of light Dragoons. They married in 13/9/1798. A son Abraham Matthews was born in 1798 but his actual date of birth is unknown however he was christened on 2/9/1798 at the Army Barracks at Southhampton. He later added James to his name becoming James Abraham Matthews Moulton. Nothing is known of his youth but he eventually went to Mauritius and worked as a horse trader between the island of Bour Bon and South Africa before emigrating to Western Australia. He arrived in Fremantle on board the "Eagle" on 26/11/1833. He married Mary Jones at Guildford, West Australia on 25/4/1838 and was murdered at sea in 1846. I am hoping you may have some information that may help me in my search for ancestors in England. _ _ _ (Regards Vickie)
