James Williams was born about 1838 in Vermont. He was the son of Cato Williams and Ellen Eunice Langley, and the brother of Civil War veteran Cyrus Williams of the all-black 54th Massachusetts regiment.[1]
In 1878, he married his second wife, Mary Dolby.[1]
