Biography

James Williams is a part of US Black heritage.

James was born about 1837 in Virginia.

James married Martha J. Galbraith around 1859. She was from Missouri and their first two children were born in Missouri.

In the 1865 Kansas state census James (age 28) was in Atchison, Kansas, United States. He was counted with his wife, Martha and their children: Henry, James, and Mary.^[1]

In the 1870 census James (age 33) was the head of household in Atchison, Atchison, Kansas. His household included his wife Martha, children: Henry, James, Mary, and Milton; as well as seven other people.^[2]

In the 1880 census James Williams(age 42), a Steward, was the married head of household in Sacramento, Sacramento, California. He was living with his wife and two of their six children.^[3]

James died (age 52) on 4 January 1893 in Alameda, California, United States.^[4]

James was mentioned on a memorial in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California, United States with a death date of 4 January 1893.^[5]

Research Notes

• James's birthplace is noted as Vermont in some places including the 1880 U.S. Census, but Virginia appears to be the more consistent place.

• This family was recorded with a variety of Racial categories over time: Black, White, or Mulatto.

• At the time of the 1880 U.S. Census James and Martha had only their two oldest children in their household with them. Three other children were in the home of another family nearby, possibly a foster family, and the sixth child, Milton, has not been located.

• Possible voter's registration from 1884 for James in Alameda County, California that places him in Alameda County before his death.^[6]

• James's death records show different races. The record with access to an image, "California, U.S., County Birth, Marriage, and Death Records, 1849-1980," recorded his race as White. The burial record at "California Deaths and Burials, 1776-2000" record is a transcription only and recorded James as Black.

• James is a close enough time-frame match to another James Williams who was born in Vermont that this should be taken into consideration as this line is explored. James Williams (abt.1838-).
