Junction Hotel Destroyed by Fire. Article - The Week (Brisbane, Qld. : 1876 - 1934)Saturday 20 December 1884 - Page 11 unction Hotel Destroyed by Fire. A little before 7 o'clock on Monday evening the residents near the Junction Hotel, which is situated at the junction of Ipswich and Boggo ^roads, about three miles from the bridge, were startled by a loud, noise, resembling that of a blast. An inquiry revealed the fact that an explosion had taken place at the Junction Hotel,, which, was soon after enveloped in flanges, and in less than an hour was burned to the ground. It appears that the lessee, Mr. Edward Thorley, who has lately had the licence transferred from his son-in-law, John Smith, was in a little room at the back of the bar, and he thinks he must have trod on a match which ignited a little spirit which had been spilled on the floor. A cask of rum which \vn& in the room was thus enveloped in flamos, and immediately a loud explosion took place and the room was filled with sujpke" and names. Thorley says he remembers no more until ho found somebodv - pulling off his trousers. Several people were . in thcTbar at tho time, and hearing the explosion at once made for the doer, but afterwards returned and succeeded in dragging out Thorley, and pushing Smith through a window. The latter nad gone in to assist his father-in-law and to get what money ho could from tho till. By this time tlie place was all in flames, and being a wood house and somewhat old, having been ereoted about sixteen years ago, it burned very quickly. The neighbours rendered what assist ance they could, but notliing was saved from the house. The house, which contained about eleven rooms, was the property of Mr. John "Neil, a blacksmith, who Hves close by, and was insured in the South British Insurance Company for £500, but we have been unable to asccrtaiu what insurances, i$ any, are on the stock and fnrnituro. It is stated that between £40 and £50 in baud, cosh, were coiisumed with the building and between £50 and £60, worth of jewellery lias also been destroyed. Sub-inspector Durham, Sergeant M'Kcnna and some firemen and policemen were quickly on the soeno, and rendered what assistance they could. Both Smith and Thorley wore severely burnt, and Dr. Kebbel was sent for and did all ho could to alleviate their sufferings.
