Biography

James Thomas was born in Kent, England.

James was born on 11 March 1864 and baptised on 24 April 1864 in Thorpe, Surrey, England. He was the son and youngest child of William Thomas, a joiner and builder, and Emma Budden.

Unlike his oldest brothers Henry and George, James didn't initially follow his father into carpentry or the building trade. At the time of the 1881 census, he was working as a gardener and still living at home on Rosemary Lane. Thorpe, with his widowed mother and siblings.

By 1901, James was married and living in Chertsey, Surrey. He was a self-employed wheelwright and coach builder. His business was doing well enough for the family to employ a live-in maidservant.

In 1897, he married Eliza Fanny Hine. The marriage was recorded in Windsor Registration District which included Chertsey and Thorpe. Eliza had been born and brought up in Thorpe. She was the daughter of Joseph Hine, a builder originally from Bray in Berkshire, and Emily Higham from Hoxton in Middlesex.

James and Eliza had five children, all born in Chertsey: Arthur George (1898), Lydia Emily (1901), Lucy Jean (1903), Marjorie Bertha (1905) and Phyllis Emma (1910). Arthur would grow up to assist his father in his business. By 1939, James had become a timber merchant.

James died in 1955 in Truro, Cornwall. He was 91. Eliza had died the year before in Surrey.
