Biography

William Thomas was born in Wiltshire, England.

William was baptised on 25 February 1827 in the village of Langley Burrell near Chippenham in Wiltshire, England. He was the son of John Thomas, a carpenter and part-time farmer of 40 acres, and Mary Bryant.

William began work as a carpenter's journeyman whilst still living at home with his parents in Hardenhuish, Wiltshire. When his first child was born in 1852, his occupation was recorded as a coach builder. On the baptism record of his 2nd child two years later, he was simply described as a carpenter. He went on to work as a joiner in HM Dockyard at Woolwich on the south bank of the Thames.

William married twice. His first wife was Jane Duck, daughter of Isaac Duck, a farmer and miller from Kington St Michael, Wiltshire, and Sarah Bailey. William and Jane were married on 12 February 1847 in the City of Bath, Somerset. They had one child, Albert John Thomas born in Hardenhuish, Wiltshire, before Jane's premature death in 1849, aged 26.

William's second wife was Emma Budden. William and Emma were married on 1 December 1850 in Whitechapel in the east end of London. Emma was the daughter of James Budden from Romsey in Hampshire, and Lydia Rogers.

The couple had six children. The first, Mary Jane, was born in Corston near Malmesbury, Wiltshire on 4 March 1852 and baptised there on 16 May. Their next child, a daughter named Emma, was born in the village of Thorpe, which lies between Egham and Chertsey in Surrey. They must have moved to Woolwich sometime between the birth of Emma and the night of the 1861 census. They left Woolwich sometime after the birth of their last child, James Frederick, who was baptised in Woolwich on 24 April 1864. Thereafter, William and Emma settled in Thorpe where William worked as a builder and wheelwright.

William passed away in 1877 and was buried on 10 March in St Mary's Churchyard in Thorpe. Emma lived for another 12 years and was buried at St Mary's on 6 April.
