Biography

Surrey (historic flag)
Emma Thomas was born in Surrey, England.

Emma was born in 1854 and baptised on 25 May in the village of Thorpe, which lies between Egham and Chertsey in Surrey, England. She was the daughter of William Thomas, a joiner and wheelwright, and Emma Budden.

By the age of 16, Emma was working as a servant for the Reverend Robert Willan, Minister of Egham Congregational Church. Then years later, she was working as a nursing attendant in the District Lunatic Asylum for the County of Middlesex in Friern Barnet. By 1891, Emma was still unmarried and had taken on the role of housekeeper for one of her brothers (Henry) who worked as a builder in Emma's home village of Thorpe.

Emma finally married on 4 January 1905 in Battersea, London. Her husband was Edwin James Quinlan from Wandsworth, a widower and ex-mariner who became a mechanical engineer. Edwin was the son of Philip Quinlan, a mariner, and Mary Ann Farrow. He had 7 children (6 girls and one boy) by his first wife, Rose Ann Stuckey. The youngest was already 17 when Emma and Edwin wed.

Edwin died in Lambeth, London, in 1920. Emma outlived him by 21 years. The 1921 census shows that she went back to work as an Old Women's Attendant at Holborn Institution (Shoreditch Workhouse) run by Holborn Board of Guardians.

Emma died in the second quarter of 1941 in Chippenham, Wiltsihre. Two years earlier, at the time the 1939 England Registwer was taken, Emma was living in Chippenham in the household of Roland Ferris, a labour, and his wife Sarah.
